Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
It's here! Tomorrow is cleaning day and I will have the sofa properly modeled - come back for pictures :). Everyone is enjoying this new featured piece in our family room.
Our delivery from SUN was less than perfect, but Duane has handled that very well (as you would expect). I will write a full review soon. We will return to The Keeping Room for an ottoman and/or desk chairs in the future -- the H&M pieces are built to last, and we love the quality.

Re: Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
Its quite a handsome piece!
We had quite a go with delivery on this one, and Bevogal never lost her cool about it. I told her she could tell the whole story here, because I always believe in the truth above all else and let the chips fall where they may, and since we are all adults here we know that everyone makes mistakes from time to time. I think its important to share the good with the bad so that folks can make informed decisions about whom they buy for and how things can sometimes happen.
First, her delivery was a bit late. Not hugely, but it took about a week longer to get to Texas than normal. That's an irritant, but nothing major. However, when they were getting ready to load out of the Dallas facility to her house four hours down the road, they noticed about a dozen markings on the piece and didn't want to deliver it. Sun contacted me first and advised Bevogal of that, but she had already disposed of her existing pieces and really didn't want to send the entire sectional back to H&M and have it gone another 4 to 6 weeks for repair to new status. So the question became - how bad are the marks and can they be touched up?
Like most organizations, we were dealing with entry level at Sun and they said there was nothing they could do but the truck was being loaded the next day and she would have to accept it damaged or it would go back to NC otherwise. That's an unacceptable answer so I got involved and asked the owners of Sun to send in a Dallas Leather Expert the next morning to see if he could manage the repairs. They agreed to do so, but the gentleman they sent in said there was nothing they could do. After that, I asked for detailed photos of the markings. Of the dozen or so, ten were normal pressure marks you expect to see on Weston - Sun is just not used to handling fine leather pieces (85% of all leather out there is painted Chinese). So that was a relief, but two marks were abrasion scratches, and from the poor quality of the photos I could not tell how severe they were. BevoGal at least wanted to look at the furniture so while Sun balked at delivering it, I insisted they should do so and she still retained rights of refusal. I also quick-shipped her a cleaner/conditioner kit that sometimes works at massaging out friction marks.
Saturday rolled up - delivery date. While Bevogal was getting her delivery, I had the person buying my Toyota Tacoma here to pick it up and do the title transfer, and then two sets of customers on the store buying furniture, and the Sun Truck is at her house! It was madness trying to juggle it all, but I knew she needed me on the phone while they off-loaded her sectional. First they said they only had one half of the sectional on the truck and my heart sank. HOW COULD THEY LOAD JUST HALF OF IT? But they pulled the half they did have out and indeed the scratches were more severe on this nearly $ 10K piece than we anticipated. I told her 'You paid for new, you should have new - don't accept anything you are not happy with'. After a few calls back and forth to Sun Dispatch, it turns out the other segment was on the truck and the delivery team was just being lazy, expecting her to refuse the one piece. I got on the phone with the Sun Delivery guy on site and (didn't yell at him) but told him to offload the second piece and let her look at everything together out in the driveway. So they did.
Bevogal was torn between refusing the piece and accepting it as it would take 6 weeks to do a round-trip and repair. She sent me better photos and I could immediately see the sections in question would have to be re-leathered at H&M, which was going to be costly for Sun and take some time to do. I told her these were non-repairable at her home and if she accepted the piece, they would always be there. She and her husband debated, but in the end agreed to take them if Sun would discount the $ 594 delivery charge. The Driver said he could not do that. I wasn't going to let that happen, and got on the phone with Sun's HQ in North Carolina and told them to switch the billing to my store and I would pay for the delivery fee. Well, on a Saturday the big bosses at Sun were not there to approve that but as I told the Customer Service people: "You see The Keeping Room come through on a lot of shipments, don't you? And you know I have a net 30 Billing Account in good standing, so I want to you to switch the billing to me" They agreed I am a good customer and always pay my bills, so after sending them an email authorizing the switch of billing. Bevogal accepted the piece as-is and did not pay the driver.
I decided that if that sectional was in my own store with those scratches on it, I would discount it about the same amount as the delivery charges ( $ 594) so I sent Bevogal an email telling her there would be no delivery charges at all coming to her, I would pay for it or get it taken care of. I would not feel right having here pay full price for a marked piece.
On Monday I sent the owners of Sun Delivery the photos of the scratches and told them its likely the repair cost from H&M would be $ 600 to $ 900, plus the round trip transport. I told them whatever bill there was to be on the freight should be sent to me, but in lieu of the fact that they did not have to return the piece, they should consider sharply reducing or eliminating the delivery charge of $ 594. I have an excellent working relationship with them and they agreed to waive the delivery charges altogether in light of the projected repair costs.
So while I feel bad that Bevogal's pieces where scratched, the most important thing was that she is happy with the outcome. That's what matters most. No one wants scratches on their new expensive sectional and I fully appreciate that. Sun does a great job for me day in and day out, and obviously they could not stay in business if this was the norm. About one delivery a year will go sour like this and its just bad luck it happened on her sectional. Such is the hazard of long distance deliveries however and something for everyone to keep in mind when they order long distance, regardless of the dealer they get it from or delivery company used.
I think we got a satisfactory ending to this one, however. The scratches were on the backside and not where you see it the most, Bevogal has the piece in her home and the delivery was done at no charge. Not a bad outcome overall. Thanks again for your patience in all this Bevogal, you were very calm about it all and that goes a long ways in my book.

Re: Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
Looked at another way, although they unfortunately damaged the items, they're the ones that caught it and wanted to send it back for repair (I assume at their expense). I'm sure others would have simply attempted delivery, hoping the marks would not be spotted and the buyer would just sign off. Once they have that sig, right or wrong they are legally off the hook.
Mistakes are inevitable. How they handle them is often what distinguishes mediocre/bad companies from great ones. That goes for employees, too, come to think of it.

Re: Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
Duane, you summarized that exactly as it happened, THANK YOU!
It was a harried event, but we are definitely happy to finally have our sectional. Removing freight charges helps us live with the scratches -- we are so thankful it is not in a very obvious place. And I am glad to hear Sun has removed the charges from The Keeping Room's bill as well (as it shouldn't really fall on Duane either). The pictures they sent us before delivery did not show the scratches nearly as well as my Nikon did (I took photos in the drive, and sent them to Duane). To send it off for several more weeks...we couldn't bear the thought that it could be scratched AGAIN. Seeing the marks out in the driveway does a lot to your nerves, and then trusting it to come back in better condition is just a stretch at that point. I am so glad Duane was on the phone with us, while putting out other fires! My husband was much happier after talking with him, and that makes ME much happier (after convincing my husband to spend this much $$ on a sofa, I don't want him disappointed in any part of it :)). Direct quote from my husband: "Duane sounds like someone who can get things DONE." We very much needed his assurance during this process (after my husband had an unsuccessful conversation with Sun's dispatcher, who refused discounted delivery so we could keep the piece). Many thanks again to Duane.
Overall, we understand our delivery happened to be one of the few mishaps with Sun. We will not hesitate to order from Duane again, even when the piece is delivered by Sun. Whatever I order will surely be smaller than this giant, and less likely to get a mark! However, Sun did do more than any other delivery company by fully inspecting the piece and not wanting to deliver it unless it was at 100%. A lot of lessons learned here. But so happy to have a beautiful sectional, where our entire family of five can sit together, at the end of it!

Re: Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
Very nice looking, Bevogal!
I had similar issues with rub marks on my sectional when delivered via West Express. West Express took half the sectional back and replaced a panel of the leather in-house. It's a different leather for sure that is used, but its on the back arm and not really noticeable. I waited ~4 weeks for the repair. It was going to be double wait time if H&M repaired.
Another small rub mark was touched up with the repair kit from Duane. When you put it on, you're going to say this isn't matching, but it dries and blends in very nicely.

Thank you, everyone! We took naps there yesterday...3 of us (mom and two kids) at one time :) Still enjoying it.
I do love the color and it goes very well with all my sea blue accents. Those cabinets by the breakfast table are actually lockers for my boys' backpacks, cleats, hats, etc. I had them made by Sawdust City, and selected "old sea blue" paint. You can choose from a variety of colors. Since I do not have a mudroom (major drawback that will be more apparent when my little boys turn into BIG boys with more sporting equipment, etc.), I had to incorporate something in that spot. There is a bench between them, with baskets underneath for their shoes. The grown up shoes go in baskets on that bookcase near the piano and back door (where the lamp is perched). Any time I find a piece that goes with a "classy beachy" look, and I can organize our "stuff" with it, I'm happy. Felt like explaining our reason for those extra pieces in the room!

Re: Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
BevoGal, CONGRATULATIONS on your new delivery. Sundance is such a beautiful H&M piece and it looks amazing in your home.
We all hope to receive furniture in 100% perfect condition, but as with everything in life, we know nothing is 100% guaranteed and it's unfortunate that the odd delivery is going to lack the expected standard. How a seller deals with such a situation is very telling. Duane, you deserve huge credit for rescuing this purchase and making it satisfactory for the customer even at your expense (which thankfully didn't stand). Working it out to the satisfaction of buyer (foremost) and seller and delivery company, now that's a hard feat when disappointment, upset, annoyance and frustration are emotions that come to the fore for everyone (as well as pressure on your side from needing to attend to customers in the shop and the purchaser of your truck). It is this kind of service that is so hard to find in the world today and I truly admire your 'old values' which are refreshing in this day and age and so much appreciated. Your actions clearly show a man with integrity, who earns custom through honesty and decency. Standing by your customer, as in this case, is a true example of a fine man.
BevoGal, I have to say it again that your Sundance is amazing. I love the way it fits into the whole decor of your home, you have an artistic touch.

You're going to make me blush...thank you!
Some dealers - and some suppliers - are all about "The Money". Most are, actually. It makes me cringe when I hear some of the stories out there - and some have been told right here on the forum as well. Every business runs as they so choose, but reputation is everything as far as I'm concerned. And integrity is what you leave as your legacy. I don't expect my customers to get anything less and I demand the same of all my suppliers as well. The fastest way in the world to get kicked off my sales floor is to not stand one hundred percent behind your product and your people as a supplier. I once had a vendor I did a lot of business with, David T. Smith out of Ohio, who told one of my customers on the phone that she was an idiot for not securing her hanging wall cupboard with bracing screws (it had a leather strap it would hang from and hers broke and crashed into her TV and VCR). He actually called her an idiot. She should have called me first! But when she told me the conversation in tears I picked up the phone to David and gave him a piece of my mind and he lost a major account that afternoon. I gave her a store credit for the cupboard and bought here a new VCR, too. I lost a couple hundred dollars on that deal but did right by her.
I've done well in this business - though I wish the hours were a little shorter - and prefer to operate so my customers are happy and if I don't make margin on a particular deal then so be it, that's the nature of running a business. I always try to put myself in the shoes of my customers and ask myself "What would I expect in the same situation?" Since I own the business and can make decisions on the fly, I have no one to answer to or have to risk my job trying to make an exception for a customer. I do get the occasional irrational customer who can't be reasoned with ("The $ 8,000 sofa is off on the color from the sample, therefore I demand it for free and all I am going to pay for is the shipping"). Uh-huh - that's not happenin'.
All-in-all its not too hard to find a resolution to an issue that may come up. Reasonable people can usually find reasonable solutions (unlike the U.S. Congress). lol

Re: Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
MountainLion and Duane you both couldn't have said it any better. First, MountainLion, your words echo my thoughts and I am sure many others on this forum regarding Duane's ethics and business practice. Its so refreshing to actually deal with someone in business who has integrity. I can count on one hand the number of folks who I feel that way about today. So many times I have been letdown and disappointed regarding major purchases and most especially furniture dealers!
Duane, thanks for helping me acquire the Hand Painted Sunset Burnished leather for my Carmen, the Princeton cover and now the Utah chair I just ordered today. Your integrity, honesty, and customer service is like a breath of fresh air and is so appreciated. Next year, onto the Royalpedic!

Re: Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
BevoGal, it is absolutely GORGEOUS!!! Loving everything about it (and your kitchen too!)!
If you happen to visit the forum again, I was wondering how do you like the Standard cores on the Sundance?
I'm about to order it too (in Sofa and Loveseat) and can't decide whether to go with Standard or Ultra Down...
Thank you in advance!

Hi, Damask! I am glad you wrote as I've been meaning to come back and update. The standard cores are great for the seat cushions and keep the back cushions pretty firm (comfortable of course, just more of an upright sitting position). The sun dance is not a deep sofa, but it works well with an ottoman (which we don't have yet!) -- we use these tree stump poufs from the Land of Nod, lol. It is a great place to take a nap, but it is not so wide that you'd make a big bed on it...more like laying on your side. I'm wondering if down cushions for the back rests would have given more room to scoot back in your seat? I think the standard cores push me forward, but I also think they'll break in even more over time. I never wanted a saggy look and that is why I chose standard. My toss pillows are all down so we get the "squishy factor" there :).
My dining room is my current project and I should post some decorating photos here after it's finished. I still need to order some desk chairs from Duane too! Thanks again for bringing me back to the forum.

Hi, BevoGal! Thank YOU for coming back and replying to my question :o
If indeed what you said above is a common effect of Standard cores than I may HAVE TO get the Down ones; hubby is 6'2", he sat on Down ones and was ok with them; I'm afraid that any less room, and he'll burn the sofa the day it arrives LOL Did your cushions break-in a bit or quite a bit over the past few months? Do the cushions that are used more often break-in much more than the ones that are not sat on as much...?
Would you mind measuring the inside depth on your sofa (sitting area) and the overall depth on the side? There seems to be a question whether Sundance is now 46" or 50" deep and how it effects the sitting space...
Thank you again for your help! Truly appreciate it and will be looking for your new threads to chime in as well :)
-
Re: Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
I have several measurements as you go around from the arm of the sofa side to the arm of the love seat side, one measurement per seat cushion, 6 seat cushions:
Sitting areas (I measured from the back cushion forward to the edge of the seat)
- 21 (28 with back cushion removed)
- 20 (27)
- 19 (26)
- 23.5 (wedge, 31 without back cushion)
- 20 (27)
- 21 (28)
Overall depth, I measured on the side from the deepest curve (mid-back height) to the furthest point on the front (just above the feet):
- about 42-44 max
Hope this helps! Again, it's comfortable as a sofa used with an ottoman or footrest. When my three boys aren't using the open area to play, we will get one. Right now, we use these little tree stump footstools from the Land of Nod :). I have napped on it several times as well.
Side note for others who come along: My Weston Sand leather scratches easily, but it is the nature of the leather. My 2 yo actually scratched each seat back with his nails while I was in the laundry room - awful. But I applied a little conditioner with a damp rag, lots of pressure from my hand (without the rag) and it looks better. I love the softness of the leather and the color is perfect for our home.

Re: Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
We have recently renovated our patio and turned it into a sunroom/mudroom! We have french doors leading from the kitchen to the sunroom (see old photos at the beginning of this post for a "before"). I will share some makeover photos of that area at some point, as it has been a while since I logged in here!
NOW, for the reason I came back to search the forum: we finally have a need for an ottoman to go with our Weston Sand Sundance Sectional. I'm very tempted to just buy a ready-to-go tufted ottoman from a catalog store, but I also know there was a good suggestion for a companion H&M ottoman to go with a Sundance sectional. Can anyone remember the best one? A storage trunk was temporarily dragged into place to get a feel for the ottoman.
I am trying to upload a photo, but I cannot get it to work. Maybe I will try the sunroom photos for kicks! **I promise my photo was not rotated when I uploaded it** Attachment 7907

This is the other sunroom photo I promised - showcasing my custom lockers with stained glass above (made from my sketches - a nod to all my summers in Alaska as a kid). ***Why is my image rotating after upload? Sorry about that.***
A new living room photo with the Weston Sand sectional will be uploaded later. The lighting is off in the image I was trying to use, and now I have Christmas boxes all over. Will take one later! I have placed a cheapo ottoman there in the meantime.

Because you took the photo with an iPhone! In order to stop that from happening, after you take a photo on an iPhone, then tap EDIT and go a light cropping of it, then save it. Then when you post or send it, it will not be at 90 degrees.

That's a really good-looking built in, with a great floor and cool ceiling fan. Nice job on the colors, too, especially the ceiling in the soft blue to key the upholstery. You have good visualization skills, decorating and layout seem to come easily for you!

Re: Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
Thanks so much, wisejd, for rotating the image! I did take those on the iphone, now that I remember. It's just so much easier than getting out the Nikon these days.
For All: The ceiling is Benjamin Moore "Bali" - a nice haint blue that goes with my coastal and southern traditional design. We laid the brick floor in a herringbone pattern to add interest, and I used brick there not only for it's southern appeal, but for hiding the "things" that dogs and boys track in =) The cabinet color is Benjamin Moore White Dove. Window shades are Hunter Douglas woven woods. The fans are the Minka Aire "Wave" - really cool and pick up on the wood accents in the room. Rugs are Dash and Albert (denim rag rug) and Ballard (jute round rug). This room has it's own central a/c (mini-split by LG), and on a pretty day you can shut the system down and open all the french doors to the outside. Many years from now, I hope to put a pool out there! For now, it's a playset.

Re: Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
The stained glass was made by Terraza Glass in Maryland. They took my pencil sketches and ran them through a program to create mock-ups. Sample glass pieces were sent and once I agreed on where to place the colors, they began making my transoms. It was quick and painless! The lockers are 22" wide each -- this is heaven for me as all the backpacks and school books no longer land on my kitchen table (located just inside the french doors). Closing in our patio was an excellent solution, though $$$, and will add to our resale value if we should ever move.
-
Re: Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
Thank you again for rotating the locker image too! =)

Re: Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
Those lockers look really great and the stained glass at the top is really nice. Overall a very nice room with great style!

Re: Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
Hi BevoGal,
I am currently in the midst of selecting leather for a H&M sectional. One of the leathers I am considering is Weston Sand which you have on your Sundance Sectional. Its been a couple of years at least since you got this sectional and I was wondering how the leather has held up when being used in a home with little boys and pets? We have older boys but are considering this leather and have some concerns... mainly markings, staining by dark clothing/ jeans or such since its so light, sagging or stretching and finally the look of "solid" color on a large piece like a sectional. Would you choose this leather again for your sectional or do you wish you'd gone with a more pebbled leather like Bari Taupe or Equestrian Desert? (I think you were considering those 2 and I am too ;>)
Anyhow, I am sorry to "resuscitate" or "barge into" this thread but you are the only forum member that I can find who ordered a sectional in the Weston Sand leather. Any comments or recommendations you have would be deeply appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Viviv

Re: Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
Hi ViviV, apologies for my delay! I have taken some photos today of the Weston Sand with my Nikon and am uploading them as I type. Of course, there is a dog and a hidden preschooler in some of these pics =)
I really love the color and the feel of this leather. Now, it does scratch from dog claws -- sadly, my past dogs never got on the sofa, but this one thinks she is a cat!! She is also a reading therapy dog and well-trained, but she just can't break the sofa habit (my fault). Anyway, the scratches usually look fine after Leather Magic Conditioner is applied. I should show a before and after, but I just ran out of the Leather Magic! So, I took a picture of a scratch to show you what it could do, BUT remember it looks just fine after the conditioner is applied.
I don't regret this leather b/c it goes so well with the feel of my home, and I don't like super dark or rustic looking leathers. Now, if there had been a pebbled leather in this color, maybe I would have considered it. At the time, I assumed my next dog would be trained away from the sofa, LOL. She is not a shedder, so she gets away with it. She also only scratches the surface when someone plays fetch with her from the sofa (and she pushes off). Otherwise, she's very light on her feet. There is no transfer of color from jeans so far, and my kids run and jump all over the sofa, so you can see that it is holding up well.
Stay tuned for pictures!

By the way, that is a cheap stand-in ottoman and I will get a "nicer" one from Hancock and Moore when my boys are older. Again, the scratches really do blend back in after Leather Magic is applied - just like putting lotion on your skin. One day, I'll post a before and after, but you can almost tell from looking at the back cushions vs. the seat cushions (the back cushions look as the seat cushions would after Leather Magic).
Attachment 8213Attachment 8214Attachment 8215Attachment 8216
The leather color looks most like the last up-close picture - the others may show too much flash. I don't think it is a light color, more like "wet sand" on a Texas beach (not the white sand of Florida beaches, ha!).
I wipe the sofa down regularly with a lightly damp rag and do the conditioning less often. Last week, I vacuumed under all the cushions and now I will condition as soon as I get more of the product.

Duane - can you remind me which Leather Magic kit I need? I know I only used the conditioner and not the cleaner that came in my kit b/c of the type of leather. Thanks for the input!

Re: Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
Hi BevoGal!
Sorry for late reply and THANKS SO MUCH for the feedback and pictures! We've been out of town for a wedding all weekend and last night I found my leather samples in the mailbox waiting for me!! They were probably there since friday but we were gone by early friday morning. Anyhow, my Weston Sand sample is just the perfect color in my opinion for our color scheme but my husband does not like it. And we both are not sure about the texture -or lack of I should say- of the Weston. He wants darker leather. I am now more confused.
I think your sectional looks just great! I love the Sundance! Weston Sand is a great color leather and it looks super in your home ....and i think it would in mine too. But to be honest, the one that would be sitting on the sectional most is my hubby and I'd like him to like it too. I am leaning towards taupe colors and I finally realized last night that this might be because of the curtains I have hanging in there. They are linen from PBarn and they have taupe undertones (its one of the darker colors of the PBarn linens). The other leather colors seem to clash against the curtains. SO I might have to change those out for a different linen color. I love the linen curtains because they provide texture but they are distorting what choices I am making in leathers.
I'll post a few pics I took in a few so that maybe you and anyone else who is good with color schemes can give me opinions as far as color. BTW, I really like the TIBURON MINK sample because it's not orangy. I don't want to bug Duane with these petty details because he's swamped with orders due to the sale. I don't know if we're going to make it before it's over :S because I feel like I need more samples.
I reaaaally appreciate you taking the time to post pictures and give me an update on your lovely Sundance and the Weston Sand.
Have a great day!

Re: Sundance Sectional in Weston Sand
I just ordered two Luxe Recliners in Weston Sand from Duane. Bevogal was so helpful with her pictures and advice. I can't wait to get them and post pictures. I also was looking for a taupe color I wanted anything but brown in the best quality leather. I would have LOVED to get the capri but I liked the Weston Sand better than any color in the Capri series.
