Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
My wife always wanted to go to Asheville NC for a visit, so I told her we could go if I can swing into the High Point Market on the way back. I made a very quick trip, only stopping at Sherrill Furniture and Hancock and Moore, we skipped everything else and were there for only four hours total. I took a few photos, but nothing like I normally do. Market traffic was very quiet, but Tuesday was the second to the last day and all the parties are over, so the Tues/Wed days are always more calm and everyone is tired that works the floors from the suppliers.
The good news is there was no mention of price increases, I think all the ones we saw in the past 18 months are finally over, or at least calming down. Delivery times are improving slightly, but still longer at about 5 months for most orders. While I like the Taylor King product, they cannot get under 10 months production time, so I did not go into their showroom and we are going to bring in Sherrill upholstery as their build is comparable in price and quality, and they can deliver in half the time.
A few photos I took in the showrooms
Hancock and Moore 6684-1 Ace Chair, main cover is in Finery Mahogany (GR5), Oak frame (only wood it comes in) with Espresso Finish, Old Gold Nail. "J" Stitch on Seat Cushion. Outarms in Brands Saddle, remainder in Rockbridge Saddle. This is a compact chair that sits well, however I think as shown here its too busy, this would look better in one single leather in my opinion.
Attachment 15087
Hancock and Moore CJ6827 Bella Dog Bed Performance Fabric is in Jessica Charles Friendly Sisal (GR E), wood finish is Artifacts. This is 36" W x 15.5" H x 24.25: D, its not as large as it looks in the photo - see the chair leg in the right side of the photo to get a sense of scale. Apparently they took orders for a lot of these, designed by Cory Damen Jenkins. H&M is considering making a larger version as well as they had requests for that during Market. Around $ 2,500 as shown. I know, I know.....demographics
Attachment 15088
Hancock and Moore CJ6822-S Giancarlos Barrel Swivel Chair in two variations by Corey Damen Jenkins. One is polished wood veneer on the outside The other is in Jessica Charies Gamercyh-Azure Fabric. Belgian Chocolate wood on both. While the wood back is impressive, I see nothing but headaches in trying to ship this without getting minor wood damage in transit This is a VERY difficult finish to touch up and for that reason I prefer the chair that has the cover on the outside. Its a cleaner design and will be less problematic keeping in presentable condition. This is a compact chair that measures 28.5" H 25.75" W, 32" D, SH 18.5",

Hancock and Moore # 6829-1 Guthrie Chair in Hyde Park Mocha Burnished Buck wood finish. Jokingly referred to as the "Million Dollar Chair" as it apparently was extremely hard to develop and pattern, requiring more re-works in design than any other new product in recent history. It sits well, very well actually. Funky look - you decide.

Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
Is that Dixon Creek sofa as deep as it looks? Kind of weird design to have that seam or dent in the bottom cushion, I wonder how that would feel to sit on.
That dog bed, I could see them selling a lot of those and they definitely should make a bigger size. :D
My favorite of these is probably that Jameson tufted chair, is that a recliner? Looks very comfortable.
For that chair with the wrap-around wood back, would you just leave that in the original box / crate for shipping and just have to charge more?
-
Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
The Dixon is a very handsome sofa, I ordered one for inventory and thought it sat great. No issues sitting on the detail seam, and that's a distinctive design feature.
The Jameson chairs are both stationary, a return to the classic wings chairs they have gotten away from the past few years.
That full wood wrap around back is going to be a nightmare to ship for H&M, they have got to come up with a new way to package that as what they do now won't get the job done. I have low confidence that's a viable design for them and see nothing but problems with it going forward.

Whittemore-Sherrill Furniture is NEW to The Keeping Room.
My good friend Alan Price who used to design for Hancock and Moore moved to Sherrill and I have always liked his designs (plus we talk cars and motorcycles for hours on end). Here are two of his designs that are going to be used in the furnishings for Season 5 of Yellowstone, the Kevin Costner Western series debuting in a few weeks on the Paramount network. See if you can spot them when you tune in. Both of these are classic hand-burnished hides from Italy.

Whittemore-Sherrill new designs coming to The Keeping Room. Designed by my old pal Alan Price, I think these are winners. We are new to this brand so it will take some time for Sarah and I to learn the line, but you have to start somewhere so we ordered all three of these.
# 427-03 Sofa in Burnished Leather Sauvage S221 Bark GR J, Fruitwood wood finish. Alan had an existing design that I thought was too short in the back height, so we worked together and he made this at my request to be 5" taller in the back. At Market, it easily outsold the original model I'm told.
(update 11/05/21). Lots of interest in this piece. It's not yet on their website so measurements are

D 45" (appx)
Ht 38" (appx)
inside width 76"
inside seat depth 23"

Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
I really enjoy Duane’s and Sarah’s posts with photos from market including details on the leathers and finishes used on each frame. Thank you!
I’m wondering if the Henley Recliner/Swivel is available with a glider option too. When I can afford it, I hope to order just such a combo from The Keeping Room, but need to be content for now with the Ava sofa recently ordered and the Ace chair that I will soon order in Carver Olive with Espresso finish (thank you Sarah and Duane for guiding my choices on both frames!).
I would prefer the Manning recliner but unfortunately it is not available with a glider mechanism and that’s critical to my enjoyment of the recliner, probably even more so than the swivel feature. The glider is great for lulling you to sleep before engaging the recline for those wonderful Sunday afternoon (or anytime for that matter) naps!
The Bing is also a contender.
Once again, I’m very appreciative of the wonderful service provided by this forum!

Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
Thanks! It took several hours to post all that, so I'm glad to get some feedback that its being looked at. The Forum is so quiet these days (everyone wants Instagram with pictures and minimum content) that I was asking Sarah if this Forum is even still relevant in 2022. We can't tell if there are active users or not, and only know from comments or posts.
That Henley is a super-nice unit, but it won't have a glider in it. When you put the Swivel / Glider in the unit, it raises the bottom height from the floor considerably and you lose the sleek look. Plus it makes for a very complicated mechanism asking the chair to rock, swivel and glide, sometimes they can warble a bit on the base when all that is going on. I have to say, this chair doesn't look like much in the photo, but its one of the best recliners I have sat in for a long time. It just fits and it works.
-
Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
It’s certainly still relevant to me, but I do understand the many hours of time required to answer every question in such a thorough and detailed manner.
The forum has been invaluable to me since I discovered it a month or so ago and helped me make a much better decision in purchasing a sofa as I was ready to purchase a fabric upholstered sofa from a company that I knew very little about (I even called you about that company before reading further on the forum and realizing that wasn’t the best use of your time).
I think it would probably have been a fine sofa as it seemed to meet all the requirements of fine furniture and was in the $3,000 price range, but my resistance to leather vanished after reading this forum and I purchased the before mentioned Ava for not a great deal more in the then current Town and Country program with the married leather Angelo Putty option.
I would love to have been able to afford a Capri or Carver leather on the Ava frame but will be very happy with the Angelo Putty!
So my vote as to the forum’s relevance would be a resounding YES, but I certainly understand that the time required is very substantial! For me, the more information, the better, as I’m sure you and Sarah have ascertained from my numerous emails!
One clarifying question for me about the Henley. You mentioned the complicated nature of asking a chair to rock, swivel, and glide. Did you mean recline, swivel, and glide or are rock and glide two separate things (I know the mechanics are different) and a chair that swivels will also rock to a certain extent!
Thanks again!

Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
I read it several times a week, Duane. Learn alot. Not on any social media but I know am a unicorn. I know I am aging myself but have to laugh at people who want minimal content, minimal discussion, etc., for a big decision. If it costs a fair amount of money, you need to do some research. No cliff notes, no readers digest version, do the work.....I have faith those instagram folks become confused in a whirlwind of briefs and 10 second marketing schmaltz and eventually slow down and ask questions.
-
Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
I would miss not reading your post. I would not have bought from you if I hadn't found this forum googling furniture. I'm so glad I did and I'm still learning. Thank you for your time and I read it several times a week also.

Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
This forum has been a major asset to me over the years. There is nothing else like it out there. Fully realize that the time that goes into into it is like another job. Providing photos, detailed explanations, descriptions, etc. Along with answering questions. But for people looking for their next furniture purchase or just those that appreciate nice furniture in general. This particular forum is very helpful and interesting.
-
Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
Thanks everyone, I appreciate the feedback. It took about 7 hours to photo, edit and post all those Market photos and when all you hear is crickets then you wonder (at least I do) if anyone is bothering to even read it. This forum has been going on since 2008, so fourteen years now. I realize things go out of date and people move to other venues, right now things like Tik Tok and Instagram are the preferred media streams but those are not places where you can not do detailed Q&A and database, they are mostly just entertaining videos and pretty pictures. I'm 68 now, Sarah is 31. Her generation - which is the upcoming one - prefers to have media delivered to them on their phone, whereas this forum venue requires you to reach out and works better on a computer than mobile device and that's a major difference.
We will continue to run this forum as long as its relevant but there is a real cost to it as well, appx $ 3,000 a year to keep it going without adding in the hours of time it takes for content. This is my 15,502 post, and my average is 3 per day since the creation of this forum, 7 days a week. Your replies or questions are what tells us it is still being used, it's a 2-way communication stream. There are so many search bots that crawl through the forum, when we see "Number of Users Online" about 2/3's of them are bots, so keep the content coming!

Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
"Did you mean recline, swivel, and glide or are rock and glide two separate things (I know the mechanics are different) and a chair that swivels will also rock to a certain extent"
Yes, a "Glider" and a "Rocker" are two different mechs but do the same thing. A Rocker has its low point at the end of each swing cycle, its highest point is at its center. A Glider is the opposite, its low point is the center and highest points in the travels are at the ends. Think of a Rocker like those old ponies on a spring at a playground, and a Glider like a porch swing. Because they both arc, the chair has to be built higher off the ground leading to the mechanism being visible underneath. When you do only a swivel, the chair can be built low to the ground is is more attractive. No swivel-only should rock at all - that's the sign of bad bearings of a cheap mechanism with poor tolerances in the production.
-
Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
Thank you for answering, Duane! I was hoping there might be a bit of rocking or gliding motion in a recliner that swivels because the gliding rocking will be more important to me in a recliner than the swivel when I can afford to order a Hancock and Moore recliner.

"you should be able to get page view / traffic stats from your web host, and they should be able to divide them by spiders vs regular users."
That might be above my pay grade to get there....lol

Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
You will want a swivel/rocker/Recliner then. Take a look at the Helskini by Fjords, it does all that and is motorized as well. I have one in my basement rec room that I sit in when watching the BIG TV. These are in the mid $ 2K range and are preconfigured for battery power if you don't want to run a cord to an outlet. We actually have one in stock at the moment, too.

Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
I did consider the Helsinki and am not at all opposed to the look. In fact, I’d asked Sarah about that very model in an earlier email.
But when I can afford it (I need to save up after the Ava sofa and Ace chair purchase) I’m pretty sure I’d rather go with the Hancock and Moore Bing recliner with glide and swivel, especially comfort being equal (and I would hope that the Bing would be even more comfortable than the Helsinki), even though it will be more expensive. I’m hoping that Tilton Ruby would be a good option for the Bing and still available when I’m ready as much as I’d like to be able to afford a Capri or even Carver leather.
Thank you for the Fjords suggestion!
-
Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
Of course Capri is only one class above Tilton, but there doesn’t seem to be a red-base color choice in the Capri line unless Butternut has a little red. It’s hard to tell from a photo on the internet and I seem to recall that photos of frames in Capri Butternut are more brown than red and I’d like deep red tones for the Bing recliner.
-
Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
Capri used to have reds, but they dropped them due to slower sales. In those color ways. Colors come and go, and greens are making a comeback along with a shift to lighter browns instead of dark.

This is Regina on the left, from Hancock and Moore. She’s such a sweetie! She puts together the showroom design for every Market and comes up with the leathers and fabric combos you see on every showroom piece. So when you see a nice display or cool combos, it’s a pretty sure bet it was Regina who thought it up. I have never seen Regina without the biggest smile imaginable.

Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
Hi Duane, I also very much appreciate you keeping the Forum going! I check it out a couple of times a week and find it particularly valuable - particularly given that I've moved out of the area and can't stop by as often. I don't post that often and should more frequently, but I love it. That said, I understand the commitment both in terms of money and time.
I wonder if it is worth polling those placing orders on whether they were familiar with or used the Forum when choosing to purchase through you?
Also, I think bringing in Sherrill as a brand is a great idea. Having owned both Sherrill and Taylor King I would agree they are pretty comparable.
-
Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
Thanks Chris! I started the forum as an informational source more than as a sales generator. It was 2008, we were in the middle of a Recession and there were ZERO customers. I was sitting in the store day after day - bored. Meanwhile, other stores were going out of business as they were highly leveraged and could not survive the lack of sales. I did not have that concern - but spent my time on Garden Web in the Furniture section reading the TRULY bad advice people were giving one another. I would respond with the correct answers and then people would say "this guy is a professional, I'd like to maybe buy from you - where is your store?" Then I would post back "The Keeping Room in Alexandria VA" and then Garden Web would throw me off their forum as I was not allowed to mention my store name. They did that three times and each time I was reinstated I would last about 2 weeks and get tossed off again. Finally I said "enough", I'll start my own and they no one can throw me off (Kind of like Elon Musk now with Twitter, right?). And that's how it got going. I fully realize that many users of the forum will not buy from our store, and I'm fine with that - it really exists primarily for information and as long as i get enough sales to cover the $ 3K cost annually of it, I'm good.
I like Taylor King, but there are unable to improve on 10 month build times and are unable to work through their backlogs with innovation and upgrades. Customers will not wait 10 months for something to be made, at least 90% of them won't and we have had a number of clients leave the store when we are honest and tell them that (Other stores just tell them 4 months and let the chips fall when they may). I am not dropping the line, but until they can get their build times down we won't be ordering much for floor stock.
Sherrill builds a product in line with Taylor King and Hancock and Moore, and in 2021 they invested heavily in a whole new factory to get their delivery times down to 4 to 5 months, plus they have been trying to get into my store for several years now. Not only did their VP of Sales drive up from Hickory along with their lead designer and area sales rep just to come to my store, but they worked with me to ensure I was able to have their best program pricing to get started with floor models. When I was at their showroom last week (you will get a kick out of this) Alan Price and I actually flipped a sofa onto its back so I could check out the build quality including the leg attachment method, the 8-way spring system, the steel banding, the webbing tension and the spring edge. The CEO of Sherrill (unbeknownst to me at the time) was sitting in a chair not too far away bemused by all this as he watched me do this. Other dealers were slightly horrified that there was a dealer that just turned a sofa over and gave me some unusual looks as I was down on the ground poking at the suspension .... It was, afterall, an elegant setting where everyone is in coat and ties and I'm in running shoes and a Polo. But hey! I have to see what I am going to represent and short of going to the factory, this is the only way. I never sell a line that I don't believe in and would not have in my own home.
Sometimes you just have to flip a sofa.....

Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
Good Morning Duane,
I wanted to thank you and Sarah for the Forum as well. It has certainly had a huge impact on the furniture that my wife and I (and now little baby boy) have in our home. I check in with the forum more than I should...probably close to daily haha. I will post my adventures in cleaning the burnished Authors Chair and Ottoman this weekend!!!...DAYLIGHT SAVINGS....#TAKECAREOFYOURCOW
I have no marketing experience and while my generation is typically thought to be social media savvy (I'm 37)...I don't use it much. So with that huge lump of salt....I would think users of instagram or Facebook would find the information in the forum helpful...the leather education forum post broken down to bite sized posts...protected vs unprotected...the meaning of the terms (Hand, Burnished, Pull-up)...lot of content in this forum to mine...all that is work no doubt but the knowledge contained in this forum is priceless.
Thank you again and looking forward to having a reason to buy more furniture from The Keeping Room!!

Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
I absolutely LOVE this forum and while I may not come every day like I used to since I ordered furniture after months of reading/researching this site, I still come back for updates such as when you post about the furniture market events in High Point. I felt like I could trust you fully after reading so many posts and you always answered my questions (or Sarah did) in a very timely manner. That's why I purchased from you as well as for the fact that you are upfront, honest, and have shared so much needed information for the average furniture shopper who has no clue about the quality of items inside the way you do.
I understand that it is a huge amount of time, money, effort, energy, etc. spent on both of your parts to keep this site up but I do appreciate it greatly. Maybe post about this forum (advertise by mouth, not meaning advertising by paying money) on FB and other social sites to give people who have no clue about it's existence. I know you are on those sites, but I mean mentioning the forum frequently. I ran across your site doing research on quality furniture and hit the jackpot when I found this site.

Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
I actually registered for an account just to tell you that last year, when I was buying furniture for a new house, this forum was absolutely invaluable to me. I've moved to the midwest from the DMV, and I preferred buying from somewhere closer, but I've suggested a couple of friends from DC check out your store.
I was checking back on the forum to see what you were saying about Taylor King delivery times, which is interesting. I ordered two sofas in March 2022, and was told to expect delivery in November 2022, which was a long time but acceptable for what I wanted. When my dealer checked in October, the build had been pushed back to "late January 2023." Since you said in the fall that TK could not get their delivery time under 10 months, I guess it's not surprising. On the plus side, the love seat and two chairs from my screen porch look surprisingly good in the living room, and served me well for the holidays. Just hoping I have the "real" furniture before Easter!
Thanks so much for the valuable resource, and know that there are unregistered lurkers out there.
-
Re: Quick Trip to the High Point Furniture Market Oct 2022
Yes, TK is not delivering under 10 months, its not happening any time soon. Their furniture is popular, because it has good style, is build solidly and is priced better than the competition in its class. We could sell a LOT more of it if delivery were quicker. So why is it not?
Taylor King was bought by the prior owners of Hancock & Moore quite some time ago when it was floundering. Jack Glasheen, Jimmy Moore, and Tim Rodgers got it turned around and instilled the H&M values into the place. All three of those gentlemen are retired now and this past summer Jack sold his shares to Jimmy and Tim. They are not active in the business and rarely go there, its run by Del Starnes who does an amazingly good job and he's a great guy as well.
Backlogs continue to pile up and they can only build them so fast. The ONLY solution for upper tier producers is to add production lines and that means a new building, machines and workers (that's a whole story in and of itself to find 80 or so qualified works in that region). Sherrill did it in 2021, H&M did it re-activating plant 2 in 2022, and Century did it by purchasing Classic Leather just recently. Those are all companies run and owned by younger people who don't mind pouring millions into setting up another production facility and tons of sweat equity as well. TK, owned by retirees, and just doesn't have the push from the Principles to do so. Jimmy is well into his 80's and Tim is in his 70's and retired financially secure from the sale of their companies a few years ago. I think they are both content to simply collect their checks at this point, and I don't blame them. It would take new owners at Taylor King to see a ramp-up in delivery times by adding more capacity OR a drastic fall off in orders. I don't see either happening. Were I in my 40's I would make a run at buying Taylor King and building it up further, I like that company that much. At age 68 though, I don't have that kind of energy.
We love Taylor King at The Keeping Room, but we can't get it in a timely manner either. That's why we moved to Sherrill upholstery as they are half the time frame with their new facilities and production lines - and make the same quality product for similar price points. Customers don't' mind waiting 4 to 5 months in this climate, but 10 months pushes their patience and you even start to forget what you ordered!
