Last minute decisions!! Need opinions on chairs and ottomans to go with my Sundance!
So we are down to the wire here! I need to decide on how to make this work, and I need opinions please!
I currently own a Sundance Loveseat/Loveseat sectional in Hand Antiqued Saddle. It has A nails and Nutmeg finish. I am going to purchase the Campaign Ottoman in Tuscany Harness (Town and Country), and Author Chair in Tuscany Harness.
I am considering the Achieve Ottoman to put in front of the Author Chair ( I don't have room for the Author Ottoman) and doing it in "mixed" grade 3 colors. And also the Abby Chair, possibly in Mesquite Saddle Burnished or another lighter color. I had the Hadley Chair (Town and Country)in Tiburon Butternut on my short list as well, but now that its a grade 4 discontinued leather I don't know if it will be in the budget.
I am going to try and attach pics of the new pieces I'm looking at (although not necessarily in the right color) and my current living room. The giant flexsteel chair will be replaced by the Author Chair with a small ottoman/Bootstool, the ottomans will be replaced by the Campaign Ottoman in front of the sectional, and the small wicker chair will be replaced by something...not sure yet!
I need direction on putting this together to make it work...I want to jazz it up a bit, but I don't know how. I REALLY want Buffalo Burnished Nails, but don't know where to put them. I like "I " stitching and gimps, but don't know what to put them on either? I want it all to flow together, and not look like a jumbled mess of random furniture like it is now. Help please!!

Re: Last minute decisions!! Need opinions on chairs and ottomans to go with my Sundan
Individually I love all these pieces. If I have this straight, the ottoman in the leather that matches the Author chair will not be paired with the Author but will be placed in front of the sectional. I think my head might be trying to pair the matching leathers but it could work. I feel like Duane had a couple of chairs very similar to the Abby in really neat leathers as stock when I was there recently.
My biggest problem with your plan is the Achieve ottoman. It's diminutive size (19" square) and modern design don't seem to compliment the 40" width and very traditional club styling of the Author chair, unless your plan is to use it more as an end table? JMO

You are correct, the Author chair and Campaign Ottoman will be Tuscany harness, but the ottoman will be in front of the sectional. I really want the Ottoman in the scratchy pull up leather, because I'm sure it will take a beating with feet being propped up on it, etc. I don't want to have to fuss over it :)
I guess that's true about the Achieve Ottoman...I was thinking it might look a little more "rustic" with some different burnished and pull-up leathers, but maybe not. It could also serve a an addition seat if needed. Looking at it now though it might not look wide enough if its in front of the chair, and it might also be a bit tall at 19". I liked it because I thought I coukd use it to put some "fun" colors on that I love but can't use on big furniture, and it's pretty affordable :) hmmm...good food for thought! Thanks!

Instead of the Author chair, have you ever considered the Wallace? Same basic look but on a smaller scale that may allow you to use the matching ottoman.
-
Re: Last minute decisions!! Need opinions on chairs and ottomans to go with my Sundan
I did look at the Wallace, but prefer the Author that I can curl up in :) I love the 27" seat depth! I wish the Author Ottoman was about 1/2 the depth.

Re: Last minute decisions!! Need opinions on chairs and ottomans to go with my Sundan
Daisymarie,
We went through the same thing with the Author ottoman, that piece is huge and our room is small. We looked at getting one of the Boot Stools and putting some Grade 5 gator skin or something fun on it. But the price was way more than the Author ottoman and we were worried it would look too small with the Author chair. So we ended up ordering the Author ottoman and if it's too big we'll use it as a fireplace seat or coffee table and try something else.
I agree with artielange, the style of the Achieve ottoman doesn't fit with the Author chair, but most of all it would be too tall for that chair.
Another option would be to get 2 Author ottomans in Tuscany instead of the Campaign ottoman (although I think the Campaign will look awesome), and you could move one back and forth between the chair and couch as needed.

Anaye, it's a bit of a predicament, isn't it?! I did consider 2 of the Author ottomans, but right now I have 2 flexsteel ottomans in front of my sectional and it drives me crazy!! They are always all over the place, turned sideways, over here, over there...I thought I'd be ok with it, but I've decided I really just need one big one to stay put! I wonder if the Author chair is big enough to "stand alone"...or does it really need the ottoman to be comfy?
-
Re: Last minute decisions!! Need opinions on chairs and ottomans to go with my Sundan
I'll remeasure the space and double check that the Author Ottoman wont fit...maybe I'll get lucky and my initial measurements will be off :) on the other hand, it might look awkward to have 2 large square different style Tuscany Harness ottomans.

If you're going to curl up in the Author, seems like it wouldn't need an ottoman or boot stool. That said, you already know how I feel about the Achieve, and I would call it anything but rustic, no matter what it's covered in. How about this NC010 Tresanton Bench? I bet Tiburon Butternut, even as a Grade 4, wouldn't add much cost to it. A Garfield could also look good on it. Or Native Bark, which has a really good feel to it.

If I were getting that Abby chair, I'd do it exactly like the one at Market, with the pocket. I LOVE that thing!

Maybe think about not having too many different-colored burnishes in the same room; seems like it could get too busy.

Ok, I agree with the consensus, no Achieve! I LOVE the Treasanton, I got a quote for it in the Town and Country Cameo Tan Burn a while back...it was still a little more than I wanted to spend for a small ottoman. So I figure it will just cost more if I get it in a grade 3 or 4:( sure would be adorable in Tiburon Butternut, though...but if I got that I probably couldn't afford to get the accent chair...but it's my last chance for the TB...ughhhh
I've always loved that little Abby chair with its cute pocket! I did struggle with having too many leather types in the room...the sectional is burnished, so that's why I'm thinking a nice pull up on the ottoman and Author would be a good contrast in leather type, but the colors would work well together. If I can swing getting an accent chair, I'd like it to have a little pop of contrast color because everything else is very brown.

Re: Last minute decisions!! Need opinions on chairs and ottomans to go with my Sundan
I'm always happiest, in the end, when I go for quality over quantity; every time I do the opposite I regret it. So I'd say (to both of us) get the leather you really want, even if it means getting less pieces. And now I'm curious to know what that bench costs, and what the regular boot stools cost.

Sue, I sent you a private message with the prices (not sure if I should post them)

Re: Last minute decisions!! Need opinions on chairs and ottomans to go with my Sundan
What if I added either Hand Antiqued Saddle ( sectional color) or Nile Croc Burnished (which has the same color tones as the sofa) or Auburn Alligator to the arm fronts of the Author? Would that look crazy or would it tie it back to the sectional? Any opinions on where to put my beloved Buffalo Burnished Nails?
-
Re: Last minute decisions!! Need opinions on chairs and ottomans to go with my Sundan
I like the arm front idea. I'd go with Auburn Alligator or, even better, a hair-on hide. I love petting those :)
Oh, and how about doing the nickels on the big ottoman, replacing the topmost row of little nails? Maybe with a gimp underneath them, too.

My wife is 5'0" and she loved the Author chair without the ottoman, she just crossed her legs or curled them under and it swallowed her up.
For me, I'm 6'2" and to sit in the Author chair (with feet on the floor) without the ottoman I needed a very large pillow behind my back to be comfortable because it is so deep seated.

Hair on Hide is fun, isn't it?! Might be a bit much with my cowhide rug though? I agree, the BBN would be good on the Ottoman. I'll have to find out if I can add a gimp to it since its a T&C item :) I wonder how much a grade 5 leather on those arm fronts would raise the price of the Author...I guess if I'm not getting the second small ottoman Ill have a little room to play. And I should probably get pillows too :)

Re: Last minute decisions!! Need opinions on chairs and ottomans to go with my Sundan
You have a cow hide rug? With hair on it? Does it feel weird if you walk on it barefoot in the "wrong" direction?

It's a short hair hide, so it lays flat and doesn't feel weird ;) the hairs are really soft...It's a gray/tan/white brindle. It's funky and I love it!

Re: Last minute decisions!! Need opinions on chairs and ottomans to go with my Sundan
I have a full cow hide rug on the floor of the lake house kitchen. It does not feel weird at all. It wears well, looks cool, and is easy to care for, just requiring a few shakes over the porch railing to clean. I get a ton of compliments on it. Ikea is a well priced source for them.

Re: Last minute decisions!! Need opinions on chairs and ottomans to go with my Sundan
DaisyMarie,
I have a similar situation; I wanted the Author chair and had the space for it but because of room traffic issues, felt the Author ottoman would be a bit too big. My solution was to order the Author chair and the Wallace ottoman. The Wallace ottoman is designed to match the Wallace chair which is exactly the same as the Author design-wise; only it is a smaller scale. I figured if H&M felt that style ottoman matched the Wallace chair then surely it would also match the Author. The only problem is that Wallace and Author use a different leg design with the Author having a lower profile bun foot. My solution to that was to have the higher profile Wallace leg fitted to the Author chair.
I don't know how it will turn out and Duane was not overly enthusiastic about changing the leg on the Author because it will raise the seat height and could adversely affect the comfort but in the end I decided to take the chance because the Author sits a bit low anyway.
I don't know if that would also work for you but it was my solution to the same problem and hopefully in a few weeks I'll know whether it was a good idea or not.

How very interesting about the cowhide rugs! I think one would look cool in my kitchen now that you mention it. :)

I had the same dilemna with the size of the Austin ottoman. I was looking for something a little smaller to pair with the Austin High Tiltback chair. I know the Austin ottoman is the best match and may provide the most comfort but I felt the size was too big for my space. After looking at bootstools and footstools, decided to get the Tresanton which would mostly be used as a fireplace sit. I hope its not too high for the Austin chair. Its height is listed at 17.5" but I think the middle of he bench is lower and may be only 16" high...same height as the ottoman. priced at $865 in Gr3 in weston cane burnished. I think its going to look great.

Nice! The Treasanton is beautiful...I actually like how it sinks a little lower in the middle, I think it would make a very comfortable foot rest.

Re: Last minute decisions!! Need opinions on chairs and ottomans to go with my Sundan
I don't have anything to add really, except that I can't imagine how much fun I'll have trying to find an ottoman for my Sundance (loveseat/sofa combo in Weston Sand)! DaisyMarie, I like seeing the photo of yours, and the cowhide rug as well. Delivery is getting very close...should get a call any day. I have to space these things out, for the husband's sake, so I hope everyone will have good advice when I come around again =) Many great tips out here.

Re: Last minute decisions!! Need opinions on chairs and ottomans to go with my Sundan
It's done!! The order is finally in! I ended up with the Campaign Ottoman in Tuscany Harness with Buffalo Burnished Nails around the bottom, the Author Chair in Tuscany Harness with Native Butternut gimp, the Abby Chair in Mesquite Saddle Burnished with Tuscany Harness welt trim, and 2 H style pillows with Mesquite Saddle in the center, pleated trim in Native Butternut, and Sonoma Chestnut backing. I am sooooooo excited!! Duane's customer service is beyond compare, I can't say enough about how kind, helpful and patient he is! Now for the waiting game...

Hooray! That's a lot of stuff - it'll be like christmas-and-a-half when they pull up in your driveway! And you're right - Duane has the patience of a saint!

Huh. Mine was supposed to take a month extra because they had to order the Tiburon Butternut, so I thought you'd have yours by now. Are you waiting on a CFA or something?

Nope, no CFA...I guess is been about 6-7 weeks now so I'm hoping to get the call soon!
