Static electricity from Microfiber?

As I don't want leather, we've been looking at microfiber furniture. I've been noticing that some of it really generates a lot of static electricity. The other night I gave myself some pretty nasty shocks at a furniture store while reaching down between the cushions to find a reclining mechanism handle. Then when I stood up, my hair was all flying away from my head....who needs a Van de Graaff generator when you have a microfiber sofa?? (http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu...ic/vandeg.html)

Anyway, is there anything that can be done to cut down on the static that wouldn't ruin the fabric?

Incidentally, does leather also have this "feature?"

Leather will NOT generate static electricity, but Poly fibers sure will. You can spray some 'Static-Guard' on the piece, that will control it.
