Does anyone know what this is used for?

I'm new here. I've been buying furniture at auction lately. I've come across this piece that was in with some Kittinger and other furniture and can't figure it out. Does anyone know what it is or what it is used for? Is it simply a weird display case of some kind?

I also have a question about another piece of furniture that I'll post in a separate thread.
