Lattitudes Collection is again made in China. Look at the regular FLEXSTEEL residential line, thats made in the USA. Clcik on this link, its USA made:

I can't tell you the price since I'm not a dealer for them, but it should be close to your budget, perhaps a tad more. Contact a local Flexsteel dealer for pricing.

Considering both are made in China, which is better: Flexsteel Latitudes or Seven Seas Seating by BYoung? Thanks

That's like asking which smells worse, rotten eggs or rancid milk? Your pick!

This line is a direct response to dealer requests for less expensive furniture that was NOT made in China. There is a definite backlash among consumer on made-in-China furniture these days, so makers are trying to do things here in America as much as possible (yea!)

I've often said that furniture making is not rocket science. The only way to get the price down is to cut out materials, or cut out labor. And that's what B-Y did to get into the under $ 2K sofa market in USA-made leather pieces.

So, how did they do it? Two ways. 1) Eliminate the expensive 8-way, hand-tied spring deck they have always done on their pieces in favor of a pre-manufactured drop-in spring grid, and 2) Use Splits on the side and back, the only full-grain top leather is on the seating surfaces and arms.

Cut material costs - cut labor.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, because it will let those working within a budget constraint to buy into this grouping at better price points withing having to purchase a product made in China. But I didn't order the collection (dealer buy-in required) because I'm skeptical and want to see and touch it first. I want to see how much the drop-in spring grid compromises comfort and I also how the split leather looks on the sides and back. I have my doubts. And I'm all about quality. If I wouldn't buy it for my own home, then you'll never see it for sale in my store.

Split leather is when the take a hide and slice it in half. The upper piece of the hide becomes Top Grain leather and is used on upholstery and other fine leather products, the lower section is called "The Split" and becomes suede, industrial, or shoe leather. Its more fragile and doesn't usually finish well.

So if you're shopping your local store and see this new BY grouping, be aware that no matter what they might tell you, its constructed differently from the mainline B-Y product and is designed to be less expensive. I'll take a look at it if I go to the April Market at High Point and see what I think of it then.
Hi, have you had a chance to look over the B.Y. Envision line yet? I love the E130-Twitter sectional. I have been looking at the regular line sectionals and am really stretching the budget. With 3 kids, I hate to put out that much for a sofa. I won't let them sit on it! The envision line suits my budget and style. And made in the USA is important to me. But, that being said, I do like quality. I have sat on the Roanoke (115) sectional, but nothing from the Envision line. What is your opinion on this line thus far?

    Thanks,

Well, I looked at the Envision series at Market last week and I have to say that I'm 'on the fence' about it. They're using split leather on the sides and back, but they've done a good job on it. If I didn't tell you they were splits, you'd never know. And it has a drop-in spring grid rather than an 8-way, but they sit OK. You're right, it DOES fit a budget and it is made in the USA. I have some concerns about durability over long haul (I'm not much of an early adopter, preferring to let others test the water). Everything looks good when its new, and the Envision series did look good - BY is definitely targeting younger customers on a budget with this series. So I really can't say buy it, or avoid it. I did not purchase any for my store as floor models, but that's mainly I want to see how this line holds up after its been out for a few years. There's no economic value if its 20% less than the regular BY line and used up in 5 years...I'll just have to assess the line after its been out awhile and listen to the industry talk about it.

Thanks so much for your quick response. I will inquire with some of my local stores to see if they will get any pieces in. I knew that it was a new line, but I didn't realize how new. I guess I can put off my purchase a little bit if someone is getting a piece in for stock. I'll ask around. Thanks again.

Hi Duane - did you ever get to check out this Envision line? I'm looking at a leather sleeper sofa that looks pretty nice but I wanted to see what your opinion is of this line.
    thanks!

I declined to pick up the line, because of the split leather on the sides and drop-in construction of the spring grids. One can only carry so many products and I prefer to carry ones made with no shortcuts.

    Duane,

I appreciate the information you provide on your forum. After reading posts on here last week , I came away with the fact that H M and Bradington make some of the best leather furniture these days. H M is out of my price range and so is Bradington. I am wondering if you have any further updates on the Envisions by Bradington?

Not so much over and beyond what was written already. B-Y seems to be moving away from it now. Very little 'push' on it.
