Default Another Desk/Vanity I'm Looking At

The seller told me that he doesn't know the maker, but that it's an old desk. It's 17 x 46, so I'm thinking of using it in the bedroom or guest room. The price is $250. What do you think?

Love the matched crotch grain. If it's good and solid it's definitely worth the money!

Thanks, Artie. I'm loving the grain, too. I can't quite place the style. Would you call this a modified Federal style of some sort?

I agree - if it's condition is good and it's nice and solid then go for it!

That's a classic Hepplewhite period piece, with crotch veneers on the drawer fronts and the top and legs solid. If the legs are still on and the drawers working its definitely worth $ 250.

Thanks, Duane. The seller told me that it's been refinished, with new hardware added. Does that affect its quality? I hate to take a two-hour trip for something that's been ruined.

Realistically if the drawers are not broken and the legs are on it (literally) its worth $ 250. That's not a lot of $$$ for a functional desk, and I'm sure if you pulled out $ 180 on-site it would be loaded in your truck.

It's not as pristine-looking in person (stain on the top, legs really need restaining, etc.), but it's a very sweet little piece and I think I'm happy with it. The underside looks really old, as does the back: couldn't see any nails or screws, just blocks of wood (which probably doesn't make any sense, as I'm describing it). It was made by Sligh Furniture in Grand Rapids.

You've got a great deal....Sligh is a well-known maker of furniture and has been around for years. Those are probably glue blocks you're looking at underneath. If you really would like a guided tour of your new desk, take some detail photos and post them here and we'll explore it.
