Sometimes you can get an idea from the description and price of a piece but many times you can't tell from the manufacturers website or find any info online.

What about Bernhardt, King Hickory, Henredon, or Vanguard? I know some companies have operations both here in the USA and China but if they are vague how is a consumer to know?

That's why forums such as this one exist. As far as I know, King Hickory is mid-line domestic, Vanguard is domestic, Henredon as well, and Bernhardt is imported. I'm not 100 % sure however. Normally anyone making pieces in the USA will mention it on their website.
