I've learned here that hand-tied is preferable--is this usually done with coil springs?

No idea about your question..just wanted to say it is a pretty chair. I once had the same fabric in same color on a Camel Back sofa in a formal living room. It was beautiful and because it was neutral, it survived several redecorating projects.

Here's the back of it.
If it sits well and you like it, I think $ 550 is not a bad price. That's the cost of low-end re-upholstery job on a broken down wing chair, so you'd be good to go for several years if this one was recently done.
