Avatar Image - question re. size

I'm not sure where else to post this question, so pls feel free to move it if necessary.

I downloaded a picture for my Avatar but it looked sooooo big! Then I made it nice and small - 100x100 pixels - but after I download it here again, it just got stretched to the same big square size and looked unclear / fuzzy. What is the trick to make it look smaller (eg. size of Duane's Avatar)?

(Right now I have the original one again - 288x288 pixels)

I just hate wasting so much space with every post... but I do like Avatars...
