She is. She's slow to warm up to people, but once she does, she's positively shameless about demanding belly rubs!

Love looking at people's pups (or any animal, for that matter!). The first is a pic of our maltese, immediately after she arrived home (after being rescued from a Missouri puppy mill--starving, rotten teeth, infected uterus, etc.) at 4-1/2 years old; the second is what she looked like after a few months of medical care, good food, and people doting on her (she's now almost 11!). The next is of our beautiful cat, Gracie, whom we found cowering under a car when she was just 3 months old, and who unexpectedly passed away at the age of 12-1/2 just three weeks ago. And then, our bichon, who's totally zen. All the time. She's about 14 now (we got her from someone who didn't want her any more, about 10 years ago). Last but not least, our shihtzu/yorkie mix, at about 5 months old, asleep on the sofa (he's now 2-1/2, and is a compete PITA, but loves everybody and graduated Numero Uno from his puppy kindergarten class). I'm not very good at keeping photos current, but these are what I have immediately at hand. Click image for larger version.

Organic-smallhome -- you are a hero (or heroine)! I've always said having pets has made me a better person. Somebody famous said that if you want to know how somebody treats people, watch how they treat animals. So true!!!

OT -- for cat lovers out there (though not necessarily), I recently read a novel that has stuck with me. It's "Love Saves the Day," by Gwen Cooper. As the primary narrator, The cat Prudence is a central character. She's an equal mix of naïveté, haughtiness, and heartbreaking vulnerability. The story begins as Prudence's Special Person has not come home because she has died. This is much more than a cat story, though. It's about mothers and daughters, grief and loss, healing, the power of music, community, and the devastating effects of gentrification. The cat Prudence tells the story from her unique feline perspective and in some ways, she's the wisest character of all. It's beautifully written, and as I said, it will stay with you long after you've finished the last page.

I just cannot resist sharing books that are so special to me!

And for dog lovers out there -- "A Dog's Life," by Peter Mayle is a classic! It's the"autobiography" of a stray dog who has found a home with an entertaining couple. How can you resist a dog who refers to his owners as "The Staff?"
