What do I say? $ 89K? That's a lotta money for a factory-made, glued-up mass-produced rocker with some cushions on it....

Its a Hand Made Dear,
Let's explore....
I downloaded a better high-resolution image of that chair. It lacks the features of a premium handmade piece. Specifically the stretchers and posts are glue-socket design, there are not cross pins to lock the stretchers in place. That's key to a well-made chair as glue bond construction will fatigue over time and cause the joint to fail or 'wiggle' its not a matter of 'if' it will happen, but when. Secondly, those turnings are done on a duplicating lathe, they are not individually hand-turned, another hallmark of a 'handmade' piece. The rockers themselves are not individually hand-cut and have the look of pieces run through a high-speed sander. While its hand-assembled, its not 'handmade' according to the definition of the term we use here in the United States. That of course, is based on my evaluation of the photo, I'd have to see it in person to absolutely say that for sure. I've been around a lot of handmade furniture in the past 30 years, this doesn't have the keys I look for.
The price that obtained at auction - $ 89,000 reflects the fact it was owned and used by the Kennedy's, its not indicative that the chair itself is made to the highest of build standards in the trade. While I'm sure its a decent chair, its not exceptional construction.

please check this.
Rather than paying $89,000 for an ugly rocking chair if you're a serious fan of preowned celebrity kitsch, I suggest spending $15,000 for a lock of Elvis' hair.

That way you'd satisfy your urge to own something because someone else did AND still have enough money left over to buy some nice H &M pieces.
Cheers!
