My local dealer can not deliver to my address. Even though they are only 30 minutes away it crosses state lines and they don't ship to any other states. Once H&M drop my sofa at the LD should it be a problem for myself and a friend to pick it up with a truck and take it in ourselves?

That's most curious. I can ship furniture to every state in the country (Hawaii and Alaska get pricey as it has to go on a boat). The delivery companies I use will take it up to a 3rd floor long as its can actually fit up the staircase or elevator. Sometimes there is a surcharge for high floor deliveries and if ordering heavy items, extra manpower. You would have to be more specific on model you are looking at, kind of truck, ingress/egress clearances etc. for me to advise difficulty of delivery.
