    Default Wood furniture scratches

What do you recommend to remove light scratches from wood furniture. I have an Ethan Allen coffee table with light scratches. If these scratches were on a car they could be buffed out, this best describes the type of scratches.

Get some fine steel wool, grade 0000 and wool the top evenly going with the grain. If you see a whitish dust on the steel wool pad then it's working. Wool the entire top with even pressure, Finish with a coat of wax or polish of your choice.

You need to wool the top first. Don't be afraid of steel wool! I use it so much, I usually have a pad of it in my pocket around the store.

    Hi !
There is no particular solution to it but waxing may work in some cases.
There is nothing else that could be done i feel.
    Well, give it a try.

Duane is correct about the 0000 steel wool method before applying a polish or wax of your choice. I have cherry tea tables as side tables by our sofa. Last winter, a few scratches, on one table, were bothering me. I took the table to a furniture restoration fellow in town (who I'd never met before). He pulled out a pad of 0000 steel wool at went over the entire table top in the direction of the grain. While I was on pins and needles watching him, white dust flourished. Then he wiped on a wax and the table looks better than it did originally. I came home and did the other table so it would look as nice.

That white dust is actually the lacquer top coat being removed. You've all heard of a 'hand-rubbed' finish, and using steel wool to 'knock down' the topcoat is a part of that. It takes time to steel wool a piece, so many furniture makers don't do it. I actually wool down a lot of pieces in the store after I get them from my suppliers, just to make them look better. The key when using steel wool is ALWAYS go with the grain of the wood in straight lines (don't arc with your arm) and mind the corners and edges of a piece or you will burn through it. And never use anything but # 0000 grade, follow with wax or polish when done.
