Default Fair price for matching silk camelback loveseats?

    Hi,
I'm trying to determine what a fair price is for a pair of silk upholstered camelback loveseats that are for sale on CL? The owner is an interior decorator and states that she never originally intended to sell these loveseats.
She recently downsized to a smaller home and the loveseats don't work well in the layout of her front room so she is selling the pair for $2000. The owner said she paid $2000/sofa. They are not antiques but as she stated are a very high quality reproduction and have had little wear as they were in her formal LR. She also recently had them reupholstered in silk and the stuffing in the cushions is like new. While I do feel that her asking price is high the loveseats are a nice style and perfect dimensions (58" x 28"d) to fit in the narrow front room of our 1890 brownstone. I'm considering purchasing these, although I'm not sure what price to offer, since I've had an impossible time trying to find anything else even close to these dimensions and that comes as a matching set and isn't made in China. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. FWIW- I live in Washington, DC.

Sorry, your links are dead or inactive. You can post photos directly to the forum, just scroll down a bit further from the text box and you can see MANAGE ATTACHMENTS, then add photos to your post.

Did you ask the seller what brand (maker) the pieces are?

I have a reproduction store in the Wash DC area and can probably help you out, but need to see the photos and get the maker's name, if possible.

Thanks for responding to my post Duane. I will try to post pictures later today when I'm at home. The seller did not know who the manufacturer was. We tried to look for a tag on the sofas but it appears they had been removed when she had them reupholstered. Can you give me a rough estimate of what two camelback loveseats approx 58"w x 26-28"d would cost (I know it can vary depending upon fabrics, etc.) custom made? FWIW I have pictures posted on the Garden Web "Furniture" forum under the same topic heading. Another poster on GW actually referred me to this website and mentioned that you would be familiar with this style of sofa.
    -Thanks again!

OK, saw the photos on Garden Web. Those appear to be a fairly high-line Loveseat, with crisp and correct detail and a serpentine curve to the front. The fact they are in silks mean a VERY expensive fabric. If you buy those, keep the fabric on them, its quite expensive and accounts for about half the value of the pieces. I'd not hesitate to buy those for $ 1,000 each (well worth it) if you want to keep them as is. If those were ordered from my store as new in either Southwood, or Hancock and Moore in a silk you'd be looking at about $ 3,500 each. Keep in mind silk is fragile and should not be placed in direct sunlight, or subject to hard wear. Never use water or water-based cleaners on silk.

If you want a different fabric, there's no deal on them. You can buy a new frame with your cover of choice as new for just a little more. On those units, its all about the cover thats on them.

    Duane,
Thanks again for getting back to me so promptly and providing me with such insightful information. It really helps me in making a more informed decision with regard to possibly purchasing these settees. Since my husband and I both decided that the settees and the silk upholstery would blend nicely in our living room and are the perfect dimensions I decided to make an offer to the seller.I took into consideration the fact that the seller is wanting to get rid of these now and currently has had no other offers, as well as the fact that she initially advertised them for $2000 or best offer. With that being said, I made an initial offer of $1200 knowing that she may want to counter offer. Hopefully my offer will not offend her. Anyhow, thank you again!

    Hi Robin,

You can always come up on price, and never go back down, so see what happens! They are sharp looking loveseats, and if you can buy the pair anywhere from your $ 1,200 to $ 2,000 you'll be in good stead. let us know how you make out on the deal.

BTW, depending on the location of the seller and your home, I may be able to have my delivery guys get those for you on a Saturday for a nominal fee if you don't have a vehicle capable of hauling them. You can PM (Private Message) me to work out the details if interested.

    Good luck!
