I have an older (about 20 years) H&M reclining sectional. Just today I noticed that one of the reclining seats is very loose. (See attached video)
Do I need a new recliner mechanism?

i've not seen that before....that's a new one. Send your link on that video to ann@hancockandmoore.com and see what she says.

Hi Duane,
Thanks for the quick reply. I sent this email last Sunday and it's been a whole work week. Since she's your contact I didn't want to nag her, but maybe it's time to follow up. Or maybe she's been on vacation?

Hi Ann,
After seeing this video of my older (about 20 years) H&M sectional that I love, my dealer suggested I ask for your advice.

Yesterday I noticed that one of the reclining seats has come loose.
I’m pretty handy so knowing what to expect might save me hauling the section in for repair.
Thanks for any ideas,
Howard Rubin
Try sending to gloria@hancockandmoore.com and put a reference that I sent you to her.

Thanks for your help, Duane. Here's the reply from Gloria. I decided to look myself so I removed the zillion staples that held the cloth on the bottom and was surprised to see coil springs in the reclining section instead of zigzag. Nothing obvious yet so looks like I'll have to live with it unless somebody has another idea.

Hi Mr. Rubin,
Our Motion Supervisor viewed your video and he said it appears that the rivets may be worn out in your hardware. Unfortunately our Supplier for the mechanism has changed in the past 20 years and if you were to order a replacement mechanism then it would not be simple to remove your old hardware and insert the new hardware in its place. It could be done, however it would be very difficult to have replaced.
I'm sorry we couldn't be more help.
Kindest regards,
Gloria Carson

Yes, that's a typical recliner spring grid. As they noted at H&M, most likely the rivets are worn and the units would need replacing and adapting to a new mechanism. Sometimes things are just used up, and I would be inclined to replace the unit rather than attempt a repair after 20 years use. Good luck.
