Hancock and Moore Leather Descriptions
From the H&M Dealer Price Book. UPDATED MAY 2016.
I'm, often asked which hides I like the best, so I have added a notation to the leathers that I personally think are outstanding in their class, or for overall performance and luxury. These are my simply my favorites and the opinions are mine and mine alone.
Note that some of these leathers are discontinued. Check the H&M web site for current leathers, that is kept up-to-date.
"Unprotected" leather does not mean totally bare. Every leather from H&M has a teflon topcoating and has some degree of repellent. A better tool is the "Serviceability" index, which will tell you how it holds up to everyday dirt and spills.
There is no "1" in H&M, that is commercial grade only.
"2" Serviceability will repel most anything in a normal household. Wipe n' go.
"3" will be mixed. Virtually all water-based spills roll off it, however it may absorb some oil-based stains and some acid-based stains such as vinegar.
"4" is the least repellent. Stains readily on all but water-based spills.
I personally have no qualms about using "3" Serviceability rating leathers in a normal family room environment, where most meals are eaten in the kitchen and not on the sofas. However, if you use your furniture hard, and your favorite dining area is in front of the TV, you will want to stay in the "2" range. FYI, I have "3"'s in my own home and we have no cleaning or staining issues whatsoever.
