Thread: Recliner won't stay back

Hi Duane, I also have a very frustrating problem this is my second lounge suite of the same company, I thought it was just a problem with the first lounge so the store allowed me to to swap it with another 1 as it was still under warranty and to my disappointment it is happening again, my friend last night sat in it for the first time and reclined back and wanted to push it back further and it wouldn't stay where she wanted it to, it just kept slipping forward, this is very frustrating and I'm so hoping you can give me some ideas to fix this, the recliner bits are made from LEGGETT & PLATT, it's not electric Recliner

Manual recliners are designed to work with "average" weights, for the sake of argument let's say its 175lb. If someone 110 lb gets in the recliner, it won't push back easily, it keeps slipping forward as you describe because that person simply doesn't weight enough. Conversely, someone that is 290 lb has the opposite issue, the chair wants to go back immediately and stay back. Motorized recliners have no such issues as the motor is doing all the work.

Your unit may have two springs under the bottom of the chair, flip it on its back. if you see them, they are about 6" long, remove them both and see if that helps the issue. Post # 4 has a photo of a typical spring location. Those are counterbalance springs and not needed for the recliner to function properly.

You may have a wall-hugger unit, that only works on standard loungers.

I have no idea what you have. No maker was mentioned here and no photos accompanied your posts. Sorry.

Mine as well won't stay in position when reclined. My chair is a 1991 Lane model
no.0376646, style 1159, grade 22. It has two medium springs underneath on either side of its bottom layout.

On a thirty year old recliner, your mechanism is probably broken.

Good morning Duane. I have the same question for the Ashley Foxfield Chocolate Rocker Recliner model 1040225. Are there springs that can be removed to prevent the backrest from constantly pushing forward? Or any other solution? Thank you for your help. Margo

Sorry, I am not a dealer for Ashley and unfamiliar with the workings of their products.

Recliner mechs all operate basically the same however. Do you have a conventional recliner or a wall-hugger unit? Age of the piece? Is it out of alignment left-to-right at the arms or footrest?
