    Default Split leather Sofa

Is split leather (the inner layer of cow leather) durable when used on the non-seating areas of a grade 1 or 2 top grain leather sofa? Palliser Horizons uses split grain on the sides and backs of sofas when you order the protected/corrected leather top grains, which are more durable for kids and pets but also considered lower quality. Thanks for all the great information on this site!

Splits are weaker leather and have to be heavily processed to be anything other than suede-like. I see it on inexpensive leather furniture from time to time. I'd never accept splits on the seating or arm areas as spit hides are prone to failure in stress areas (they can rip apart) , but there is low stress and low use on side and back panels, so if its cosmetically acceptable to you then it should be fine.
