    Default birds eye maple questions

    Hello,

First time poster here. I just bought a birds eye maple bedroom set and have a few questions.

    1) How do you tell, can you tell how old it is? Just curious.
    2) Best cleaning and 'rejuvenating' method/products
    3) Can it be repaired? I understand it is a veneer but the Lo-Boy top has some water stains and scuffing from something.

    Thank you,

    Mike

In order to determine age of a piece, it requires having a knowledge of furniture construction as used in various times. Detail photos would be needed especially of drawer interiors.

Bird's Eye Maple is notoriously unstable, and because of that most pieces are done in veneers.

Mineral spirits wipe down and then a paste wax follow-up is a good place to start on cleanup.

Veneers can be refinished, but should be left to a pro as the material is very thin.

Thank you for the reply. You confirmed what I sort of thought was true. Although mineral spirits sort of threw me for a bit, just because it is petroleum based (I think).

    Thank you again,

    Mike

Mineral Spirits cleans off all the old wax, grease, and impurities without disturbing the underlying finish. That gives you a good, clean base to apply the paste wax. You don't want to wax over dirt.

We have used Briwax for a long time on our wood furniture. You can find it online or in certain hardware / antique places.
