    Default Recliner vs Tilt Back

Sorry if this has been discussed before - Can anyone tell me the difference between H&M Recliners vs. their Tilt Backs?

    Thanks!

    Quick answer
Recliner - three position recline and footrest is built into the chair and comes up when reclining.

Tilt Back - Just the back reclines to a position of your choice and requires an ottoman for foot rest.

Do a search you'll find Duane answering this a lot better than I did.

Tilt Back allows a lot more seating options, and is a stronger chair. However it requires an ottoman to function properly so the cost is higher as you are buying two pieces, and you have to have the room for the ottoman. Tilt backs preserve the 8-way hand-tied seat deck, which recliners do not have.

What is the difference in how much they tilt/recline back?

Does both tilt back to the same maximum angle?

Both recliners and tilt backs recline back to what is best described as a 'sleeping' position. The main difference is the mechanisms to get there is the recliner works on a spring pre-load system, whereas tilt backs run on a gas strut. The strut models allow you to stop the chair anywhere on the path of recline, the spring-loaded recliners tend to only want to stop at the detents (unless you order power recliners).

    Thanks Duane,

Your posts have me interested in the Austin tilt-back. Of course, there's none around the Vancouver British Columbia area (Jordan's is the only Canadian outlet, exclusivity is in effect apparently)
My wife and I well have to go over to Vancouver and sit in some seats, but I'm expecting not to find the exact chair (1 of the Jordan stores, has only one H&M chair, the Statement), and will have to order on faith, providing nothing else presents itself.

There's lot of folks here on the list that own the # 2038NB Austin High Back Tilt Chair. Perhaps put a post into the Leather section and see what they think of them? While perhaps not the most stylish chair in the H&M line, I think it reins supreme as the most comfortable chair in the line.

My husband and I can speak highly of the Austin Tilt-back. Although we haven't received our chairs yet (they are being made as we speak) we absolutely fell in love with the comfort of them in Duane's store! We were thinking about a lounger but after the feel of the 8 way hand tied seat and ability to tilt the back as much or as little as you want we were sold! We actually decided on two of them (with ottomans of course) instead of ordering a second couch or love seat. As a little side note, my husband and I vary in size and weight by about 50lbs and we were both very comfortable with the support the chair gave.

    Thanks Duane and CKeefer,

My wife and I are about, 5' 8". I showed her the Austin (not the high back, might be too high) and she didn't poopoo it, so it's on our list.
It's more than we really want to spend. I can justify the cost as to worth and workmanship. We're after 2 of them, probably in the Antelope.

Could be the last chairs for our family room we'll need to purchase for our selves.
