Recliner won't stay back
I have an H&M recliner that is maybe 6 years old and it leans back and raises the foot rest fine, but then when you push back more to get the back to go down into more of a reclined position, it goes down but then sits back up as soon as you stop pushing. It is like the spring or strut has too much pressure or something and won't stay in the more reclined position. Anyone have any ideas on how I can go about fixing this?

Re: Recliner won't stay back
Sounds like it needs a Booster Spring. What model recliner is it? If no model #, then can you post a photo or two so it can be identified?

Re: Recliner won't stay back
Thanks Duane. It is a Woodbridge / 1021. If that is what it is, how hard are they to replace? Anything I can check underside to see if things are connected right?

Re: Recliner won't stay back
# 1021 has a pair of springs on it one left, one right. Try taking one off - it will only take a couple seconds and all you need is pliers. See how that works for you and if it solves the problem.

Re: Recliner won't stay back
Thanks for the photo Duane, very helpful. I disconnected one of the springs and now it stays fully reclined! I guess it had too much tension? Is there a downside to staying with just one, perhaps more pressure on only one side of the mechanism?
-
Re: Recliner won't stay back
No downside, if that works for you then use it like that. The springs are an assist, they are not part of the function of the mechanism in normal operation

Re: Recliner won't stay back
That is great, thank you Duane.

Re: Recliner won't stay back
Hi Duane. I too have a similar issue as Danw99 with a recliner that doesn't stay in a reclined position and I don't weigh enough to hold it back.
I ordered and recently received a Bradington Young - Laconica 7050 swivel rocker recliner. I hadn't noticed that it didn't stay in a reclined position while sitting in a model on the showroom floor.
Do you have any suggestions for this particular model regarding its recliner mechanism? Didn't want to remove any springs since I don't know enough about this particular model. Thanks so much for weighing in on this with your professional expertise.
-
Re: Recliner won't stay back
The 7050 has a wall-hugger mechanism, so it operates completely differently and with a "trip" style mechanism. The spring trick will probably not work on a wall hugger. I recommend all wall huggers be purchased motorized, as the mechanical mechanisms are fussy on them. Sorry, no tips on that one - contact you selling dealer and ask them to call B-Y to see if they have any tips. Good luck.

Re: Recliner won't stay back
Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.

Re: Recliner won't stay back
Good afternoon. I have a lazy boy recliner. It reclines just fine but most of the time while reclining all of a sudden something releases and the chair partially goes down but not all the way. Any suggestions would really be appreciated

Re: Recliner won't stay back
Your recliner mechanism is broken and needs replacement. Because La-Z-Boy is imported, they may not offer replacement parts the way the USA made product does. Good luck.

In most cases you will need to replace the mechanism.

Hi Duane. I’m having the same problem with the Lewis Leather Recliner from West Elm. Any idea if it’s a simple fix?
I see four springs under the chair. Two towards the front footrest area and two in the back. I assume these are there simply to facilitate the reclining motion, and that I would need to detach one of the back springs to resolve the problem. Don’t have much experience here though and wanted to be sure.

Re: Recliner won't stay back
Sorry, I don't know the mechanisms in that brand.

Re: Recliner won't stay back
I just bought 2 Better Homes Gardens Adams Push Back recliners at Walmart.
I'm 5/10 250 lbs and it is a very comfortable chair.
The problem is it will not stay fully reclined.
If I move at all it slips back.
If I put my hands behind my head it will stay ????
Any ideas. Just want to chill fully reclined. Thanks

Re: Recliner won't stay back
Spring tensions are off. Flip it upside-down and you will see two springs on the bottom, parallel to the metal recliner mechanism. On some recliners there is a wingnut and you can adjust tension fore and aft. Others do not have adjustments. If yours does not have adjusters, then remove one of the springs and try it without it. Good luck.

I know this post is several years old, but wanted to say "THANK YOU!" for the spring removal advice. My unknown-name recliner will now stay reclined without a fight.

Re: Recliner won't stay back
Hi Duane, I also have a very frustrating problem this is my second lounge suite of the same company, I thought it was just a problem with the first lounge so the store allowed me to to swap it with another 1 as it was still under warranty and to my disappointment it is happening again, my friend last night sat in it for the first time and reclined back and wanted to push it back further and it wouldn't stay where she wanted it to, it just kept slipping forward, this is very frustrating and I'm so hoping you can give me some ideas to fix this, the recliner bits are made from LEGGETT & PLATT, it's not electric Recliner

Re: Recliner won't stay back
Manual recliners are designed to work with "average" weights, for the sake of argument let's say its 175lb. If someone 110 lb gets in the recliner, it won't push back easily, it keeps slipping forward as you describe because that person simply doesn't weight enough. Conversely, someone that is 290 lb has the opposite issue, the chair wants to go back immediately and stay back. Motorized recliners have no such issues as the motor is doing all the work.
Your unit may have two springs under the bottom of the chair, flip it on its back. if you see them, they are about 6" long, remove them both and see if that helps the issue. Post # 4 has a photo of a typical spring location. Those are counterbalance springs and not needed for the recliner to function properly.

Re: Recliner won't stay back
Thank you I did what you said removed doth springs and then I couldn't use the recliner lever the foot part wouldn't work
-
Re: Recliner won't stay back
You may have a wall-hugger unit, that only works on standard loungers.
-
Re: Recliner won't stay back
Can you please tell me what is a wall hugger please and what is the difference as all I can see is just 2 springs and no wing nut just a lot of pins in the holes that I can't remove
-
Re: Recliner won't stay back
I have no idea what you have. No maker was mentioned here and no photos accompanied your posts. Sorry.

Re: Recliner won't stay back
Mine as well won't stay in position when reclined. My chair is a 1991 Lane model
no.0376646, style 1159, grade 22. It has two medium springs underneath on either side of its bottom layout.

Re: Recliner won't stay back
On a thirty year old recliner, your mechanism is probably broken.
-
Re: Recliner won't stay back
Good morning Duane. I have the same question for the Ashley Foxfield Chocolate Rocker Recliner model 1040225. Are there springs that can be removed to prevent the backrest from constantly pushing forward? Or any other solution? Thank you for your help. Margo

Re: Recliner won't stay back
Sorry, I am not a dealer for Ashley and unfamiliar with the workings of their products.
Recliner mechs all operate basically the same however. Do you have a conventional recliner or a wall-hugger unit? Age of the piece? Is it out of alignment left-to-right at the arms or footrest?
-
Re: Recliner won't stay back
Hi. I saw it in an Ashley showroom several months ago. It was perfect except for the issue of the backrest wanting to push me forward. When I read other posts at the beginning of this thread I came across your idea of removing a spring to alleviate this issue. I’m not sure if this model has such springs to allow for this fix. It is no longer in the local showroom for me to inspect. It is available online and I would purchase if I knew the answer to this issue. It is a conventional recliner with a lever as shown at this link. Thank you.

Re: Recliner won't stay back
If a new unit, you should not buy it if you don't like the way it is presented and built. You do know that Ashley furniture is very poor quality, yes? Don't expect too much from it should you move forward with it is my advice.

Re: Recliner won't stay back
Hi. Just a follow up to my earlier inquiry. I found a pdf showing the detail of the mechanism for this Foxfield Rocker Recliner. By looking at that, can you tell if it would allow for the procedure you suggested at the beginning of this topic of removing a spring in order to prevent the backrest from pushing forward when in the reclined position? Thanks again.

Re: Recliner won't stay back
Sorry, I cannot make a recommendation one way or the other on that unit, as I am unfamiliar with it. Those springs are NOT located in the area as the ones I am used to working with. Good luck.
-
Re: Recliner won't stay back
Thank you for looking. I thought it might be the spring labeled 74550 toward the back corners of the unit. I assume the larger springs in the middle are for the rocker feature.

Hey there.
So I'm going to post some pictures of the underside of recliner that I got, I don't know if it's just funky and built poorly, or it lost a spring or I need to find out where to adjust it because even if it's just sitting on the ground and I pull open the recliner lever and the foot comes out, and then I push the recliner back it will just from its own weight go back up.
And I'm kind of a bigger guy so me sitting on it it feels like it's fighting my back and even if I just kind of move a little bit that things pushing forward, it's completely not comfortable.
It's comfortable to sit on but because the back is fighting me the entire time basically, fighting the weight of my body, it's ruining the comfortable experience.
Do we know a way to fix this? I looked all over for a name brand by the way and I don't see any tags I don't know if this is just some generic build or whatever.
If you need a picture of the actual chair let me know. Thank you in advance.

See the small springs? Try taking them off and see if that makes it better
