Bradington-Young recliner footrest spring

I love my B-Y recliner I bought about 20 years ago. Recently a spring broke and now the footrest will not retract. I called B-Y and they sent me two replacement springs. The photo below shows the old spring (black) and one of the new ones (chrome). When the spring broke it was the hook on the end that snapped off (right end of the spring shown).

Underneath the recliner there is a spring still intact but it seems to be about 3x as long as the one in the photo. There is no corresponding spring on the otherside in a similar position. So I'm not sure where to attach it.

Here are a couple of probably-useless photos of the recliner. The close-up of the spring is the one that remains and which is larger than the one that broke off. Anyone have a suggestion?
