Office chair gas cylinder replacement
I have an older inexpensive black leather office chair, probably bought at Staples, and dated 1995 under the seat, manufactured in Canada. Not high quality, upholstery is stapled in place. Surprisingly, leather looks perfect, no wear at all. The gas cylinder needed replacement so I bought a standard off Amazon, planning to just use the chair in the basement. The cylinder does not fit. Standard cylinders now are all 2" diameter on the collumn end that fits into the base, and the old one is 1.5". Even the least expensive replacement chair base that I assume would have the 2" hole is about 45.00. The cylnder was about 20.00. 65.00 seems like quite a bit to repair a chair that is 26, going on 27 years old. On the other hand, you can't buy even a cheap one for that any more. Ideally, I would like to just buy a new cylinder that fits. Does anyone know if they even make them in any other size than the 2 inch diamter any more? Should I just scrap it? The photos give whatever information I have under the chair. Really no brand name and nothing more than the date and place it was made and that it is leather.

By the way, HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Re: Office chair gas cylinder replacement
That’s a needle in a haystack kind of quest. Depends on how much time you want to spend chasing it and buying trial cylinders to see if you can make them work. I would not even try.
However, since only you use the chair, get it extended to where you want it, drill a hole in the cylinder and then run a screw into it. It will stay fixed at that height and usable.

Thanks. Not worth spending a ton of time or money on.
