    Hey Duane,

To put this horse to bed. I'm back at Plan A - Take out the door frame and get the French Curve Sofa, a Arrington chair, and a Swindon Wing Chair with an appropriate Ottoman. See you soon when we talk delivery on the Author Chairs.

That’s one way! I would replace the door when it comes out, they are not that costly. I put up with a 32” door in my basement for twenty years. Last summer I had it yanked out, found a nice high quality door at Lowes tha opened to 60”, and had the contractor doing my deck install it for $1,200. Now it’s so easy to get things in and out, wish I had done it sooner!

    Morning Duane,

We got the call from Sun Delivery that they will be delivering the deep Y87 and the sofa Ottoman this Friday...Can't believe it but very excited!!

I was re-reading some of these posts and it made me realize that I had misassesed the entry width. I was measuring the width of the closed door instead of the actual width of the door opening when the door is open.

When I account for the maximum opening of our front door. The maximum width is just over 34 inches with a height of 96 inches. Will this be a problem? or should I seek out any padding prior to the day of delivery?

    Cheers!

You should be good to go with a 34" door opening, I don't foresee any clearance issues with a H&M Y87 sofa. Good to hear, delivery times seem to be slightly improving, but are sporadic.

I think that when houses and rooms are designed certain dimensions are used to specifically for furniture upon moving into and from room to room. Being a former packaging design specialist, I would always design shipping corrugated packaging based on the sizes of furniture so that if a piece of furniture might be too large, it would be packaged into more cartons to allow for a smaller carton or box which would fit through a doorway with no problem.

We are looking to buy a sofa, loveseat, and chair for our basement that is currently being finished. The stairs for the basement have a 90 degree winder turn at the bottom. The legs can be removed from the sofa and with the semi-attached back cushion compressed it will be 27.5" tall, 37" deep, and 83" long. The loveseat, chair, and ottoman should come down the stairs with no problem. We would be paying for the in-house delivery and tipping the delivery guys well.

The fabric sofa will have to come through the door at the top of the basement stairs with the 37" depth vertical; then be stood on end somewhat so it can be rotated so the 37" depth is horizontal and brought down the stairs. It doesn't have to be stood on end coming down the stairs. Where the stairs turn 90 deg. there is a height constraint of 83" (slightly less once the carpet and pad go in on the stairs) about for about a 2' beyond the turn. The problem is the sofa is 83" long, same as the height of the space. At the bottom of the stairs, the sofa would have to be stood on end and slid on it's end for maybe 12" before the arm would drop past the first winder step giving an extra 2" of headroom. Past that, the movers could slide the sofa another 2' and lower the sofa down another step and start to lift and angle the sofa out of the stairs. During that 18" the sofa would be sliding on the stair carpet and rubbing on the ceiling. We can put cardboard on the stair and the ceiling to help protect the fabric.

Does this sound doable? I am attaching a drawing of the stairs and the sofa on them. They do make a similar sofa series that comes in a 76" vs the 83" and we could live with the smaller sofa, but they also shrink the loveseat and the chair, which my wife isn't crazy about. The styles are just different enough we probably wouldn't want to mix and match. We would still have to slide the shorter sofa on its side/end for the same distance but we wouldn't have the top end rubbing on the ceiling.

    Thanks for any advice!

That will be challenging! At my store we would decline the order based on what you have laid out. It’s way too tight, things get damaged. If that’s your only entry point into that area buy a sectional with single piece components is my recommendation.

    Duane,

Thanks for your insight. Is the part about sliding the sofa on its side/end the part that you are most concerned about or is it the whole thing? For example, does a 60" loveseat with the same depth and height worry you? That will help me look for other pieces that might work. Thanks again for your help.
