In the third picture, Buddy just came home from being at doggy daycare all day. He obviously was exhausted since he decided to take a nap like this... Poor guy has a tough life…

My husband grew up with an English Bulldog, named nugget duchess. I love these dogs but, he really didn't want another one as the girl they had, always seemed to have health issues so was such a heart breaker for him. I couldn't talk him into a bulldog no matter what I said! They are such sweeties though! Look at those faces!

I agree... They can have health issues. Many have skin allergies and ear infections. Our Ben (9 years old) is a prime example. Ben had chronic ear infections for over two years. I even took him to a highly recommended allergy specialist to try to get this condition cleared up. They had Ben taking meds and using a special solution to flush out his ears three times a day. It helped, but never completely cleared up the ear infections. They eventually wanted me to give him allergy shots every day. I held off and did some research. I was reading more and more that food can cause many allergies. At the time we were feeding them several highly rated grain free kibbles. So, about 2 1/2 years ago we decided to switch Ben and our other bulldog to a RAW diet. It includes organ meat, bone, green tripe, etc., not just raw meat. I know... It sounds gross... However, we’ve had great success switching them to a raw diet. Within two months, Ben's ear problems cleared up and have never returned. Now, we only have to clean his ears once every couple of weeks. And, what we clean out is just the normal wax and not smelly white yeast. The draw back to a raw diet is it can be expensive and does take more time. We are lucky to have a local butcher who actually sells their own dog food made up from their trimming scraps plus organ meat. They also sell fresh green tripe. My wife and I are volunteers for our local bulldog rescue. Over the past year we have been able to help several local bulldog owners clear up chronic allergy issues by helping them switch to a RAW diet. Sorry for being so long winded! We love animals and especially our bullies!

"Our Ben" lol...we say that around here too but, it's due to the fact that "Ben" is my son's name.

It doesn't sound gross to me! The people we got our puppy from had Atticus on "Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul" another "Diamond" product. I do my homework and love research and learned how often those products had been recalled so wanted to get my puppy off of that. Then after reading a TON more found that really nothing is comparable to RAW. So, we have been weaning him off the Chicken Soup stuff. He's had some Orijen but, it didn't compare with the RAW. He LOVES it. I got mine from someone here who uses only free range chicken and other meats. Someone I know personally but, eventually I'll probably make the stuff myself. What's so amazing is that he needs much less of the raw in quantity than he needed of the other dry food. It's not as if Golden's are out of the woods with the health issues either. ALL breeds have gone way down hill and now have tons of genetic issues and illnesses. In Golden's it's cancer that's the biggest threat. So we really wanted to start out on the most healthy food available.

I had an Old English Sheepdog before this dog. I adored that dog and we had been told to put her on Nutro Lamb and Rice for allergies. Then they found that a large number of dogs on that food got cardiomyopathy. That's what my OES got! It took her life so I was VERY careful about dog foods and their ingredients. Not one of my OES litter mates, mother, father or grandparents had heart disease. It wasn't genetic and I will never be able to prove it was that food but, many others did prove it. She was healthy as could be before that. Cardiomyopathy is a horrible disease! I had my dog in for her annual check up in July, and was told "This is the healthiest dog in my practice." by the vet. In late August I noticed she had a little cough, nothing even noticeable most of the time but, I took her in anyway. She was diagnosed that day, by October she was gone. So fast, and so destructive. I don't ever want to go through that again. If there's a better way to feed then we wanted to know about it. This time we are not taking any chances.

It's not just bulldogs that can benefit from foods that you can control the ingredients! Years ago dogs lived quite a long time and I don't recall any of our dogs having tons of allergies, or early hip problems, heart problems. Part of it was the vaccine schedule I believe. Now the vets agree with that. After our puppy shots,I'm having titers done and if my dog is still protected then we are not going to be doing the constant vaccine thing.

You sound very much like me. I worked with OES rescue for a long time, volunteer at the human society here. I love dogs but, growing up we always had dogs and I remember my dad saying to me "Never trust anyone who tells you they hate dogs." Dad is quite the character but, when you think about it he is probably right.
