Default What is this type of sofa spring called

    Hi!

    First post here

I recently inharrited a lovely teak couch from my parents, the only problem is the springs. its missing several of them, and the others are soft.

These arn't the standard spring types, these are.. interesting. They are basicly a long thing spring, 5mmish across, with an outer rubber casing on them.

i have a photo of them here http://i.imgur.com/nxMoge1.jpg

Anyone know what these are called, and where i can buy newer ones?

    thanks!

I've not seen that before, it could be proprietary. Might be quite a treasure hunt finding those, you may have been luck getting a metal shop to make some for you using an existing one as a pattern.

In 30 years I have never seen a spring like that. Dwayne's solution is liable to cost some real money. A cheaper (and quicker) solution could be to just have the reupholsterer replace the missing steel springs with Pirelli Webbing. I doubt you would be able to tell the difference in terms of seating comfort.

Yea, i took it to a local upholster, and he said he thought they were origonally swedish from the 1950's.

i would do something like that webbing as a last resort, but i would love and prefer to keep those springs, as they seem to do a great job, and are quite comfortable.

Does anyone know of anywhere else that might yield results?

    Hi
I agree with Cohen trying to keep the integrity of the original piece. Last year I was refurbishing a vintage platform rocker. The pieces holding the cushions on the chair base were an unusual piece of rubber webbing. I did my Internet research and found these unusual pieces at a DIY upholstery supply. I would also try a woodworking supply- furniture repair search.
Keep looking! It's worth to complete it so that it has meaning for you.
