Re: How do aniline leathers wear out?
Leather will outlast fabric at a rate of 4 years to 1, but that doesn't mean it won't show some wear in the process. Mostly it depends on home much time and effort the owner is willing to invest on the piece to keep it clean and conditioned. I have leather pieces in my own home, both aniline and finished, that are over 20 years old and still in very good shape, because i do my leather treatments on them every 6 months. I expect them to outlast me actually, they're not even close to half way done. Having said that, I've seen customers destroy leather pieces in as little as 5 years. To tell the truth, I've only ever seen two or three pieces where the leather was worn through after many years of use - that's pretty rare. I'd say 90 % of all leather upholstery headed to the landfill is darkened and split on pieces to be replaced and that's again failure to keep maintained.
