ID:	6572I recently found this bench at a resale shop and had to buy it. I have no information on it at all so anything at all would be helpful. It appears to be very old and is extremely heavy. There is a storage compartment under the bench, and what looks to be a latch inside the compartment that may open something, but it doesn't seem to be working anymore. Here are some pictures. Thanks for looking.

That's fairly intricate, but photos are too small to really see the details. Definitely a European manufacturer.

That is definitely an interesting find. I did click on the photo and then clicked again, allowing me to enlarge each photo considerably. This however did not reveal any additional data about the piece. The brass or metal hardware on the back at the top center looks like it may have bee a plate which could have had some inscription on it at one time. The compartment would look like a place to conceal something particularly if there were a removable padded cover piece which is now missing. The bench without a padded cover would look to low to the ground for sitting. If that were in a church or a court room, one could envisage a few interesting possibilities for what would have been in the storage compartment. Not sure what you have seen inside the storage area that looked like a "latch". It would be interesting to put a little light on that and get another photo to see what type of latch it is. Don't know if it is a latch or perhaps a hook for keys for instance.
