1) Yes, the frames are hardwood. Most have maple frames, some of the carved ones are mahogany. No pine at all in the frames (too soft, and it tends to split on structural fitments). I've seen a few pieces at H&M (motion furniture) that use some engineered plywood in them, but not as main frame components.

3) Carvings are going to be machine / CNC or laser cut. if they were truly hand-carved prices would be through the roof and more like these pieces where a small sofa is close to $ 10K:
