Thread: Curious about my rugs

    Default Curious about my rugs

Hello all, last year I acquired several random rugs from one of my clients. He was in the process of moving and these were not sold in the estate sale. High end rugs are new to me and I enjoy learning about them. I will start with the biggest rug, which I have had appraised and seemed low. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you. This particular rug he said was a Mamluk (if that means anything) and measures 172"x122"

That's beautifully woven. Silk or Wool? Any idea where it was made? I am not a rug expert by any means, but I do recognize a well-crafter run when I see one.

The market is off on rugs right now so a low appraisal does not surprise me. Rugs that were worth $ 30,000 twenty years ago today bring $ 7,000. This is not a time to sell.

The gentleman who apprised this said "the country or origin for this rug is India with Khoton all-over design, the pile consists of 100% wool fiber and 100% cotton foundation. age range 10-15 years. I had a feeling the market was most likely in a lull right now, do you have any suggestions of how to go about selling when it picks back up?

I would take it around to three or four rug dealers in your area that deal in fine rugs and get it apprised. If it appraises higher than $ 2,000 then ask them for a written one and pay them for the appraisal. After you get two or three, you'll know Market value, then photo those appraisals and put it on Ebay at no reserve - auction only, starting price a couple hundred under the lowest appraisal.
