Default New member from Texas City

Hello, new guy here. I collect antique fans and recently got some antique furniture. Can anyone tell me about it?

Looks to be Empire. No one can identify furniture from general photos, you have to pull drawers and get in underneath and look at joinery and how the drawer is made.

    Hi, Richard.

I'm definitely not an expert, so there's that. Duane knows his stuff and if you post some photos of the drawers joinery, etc., he'll likely be able to give you some specific information. Here's what I can tell you about what I think I'm seeing in your photos:

    1) That first piece is really lovely and looks like it might be the oldest of the pieces. The hardware might be original and I think it's just beautiful. I think the wood/veneer is mahogany, possibly.

    2) The other pieces I'm rather familiar with and feel a bit more confident in offering my opinion. From the photos, they appear to be very late 1880s to very early 1900s American (vs English) oak pieces, with some areas being quartersawn oak. What I fully expect to see with the drawer joinery is that being machine made dovetail. Those American oak pieces are rather popular here in Texas. It's especially nice when the original beveled mirror is present. It's not uncommon to see that someone has replaced the original drawer pulls and/or key escutcheons which isn't as desirable but mostly not too offensive. If you look closely at the applied carvings, you might be able to tell if they are hand-carved vs machine. There are reproduction pieces around, but they aren't nearly as lovely because the scale always seems off, the carvings are machine made, the finish is not quite right, and so on.

In my opinion, from looking at the photos, I think you scored! Well, depending on what you paid, but as far as some pretty pieces with some age...score! Keep in mind, what some of us in Texas really like in old pieces isn't the same as what some in other parts of the country would consider fine antiques. We simply don't get the super old, beautifully handmade "fine" antiques down here...very often. Search the forum for some photos of the pieces belonging to Duane. Exquisite.

Again, just my personal opinions. So, not of great value other than I love what you found! Please, do post some details photos and see what Duane says.

    Richard,

One more thing... Please, for the love of all that is good, please tell me you grabbed that old fan shown in one of those photos! I had a fantastic old, beautifully restored fan like that and allowed a friend to talk me into selling it to her. That's been almost fifteen years ago and still regret letting it go.

For anyone who might be interested, following is a linked article regarding the history of the American oak pieces I believe some of Richard's photos might be showing. Duane, I've never posted a link in a forum message and hope I'm not breaking any rules!

That fan is one from my collection. I have a few. This is just the smallest shelf in the "fan room".

Thanks for all the comments. I will open the drawers and get some pictures of the dovetail joinery. I considered myself lucky that the bed and dresser were a set w/matching Top trim pieces.
