    Default Used up leather

Today we replaced a Hancock and Moore Austin sofa purchased in 2007 with a new one made in 2022. Fifteen year lifespan on that piece, and the client liked it so much they re-ordered the exact same sofa right down to the same leather. They asked us to dispose of their sofa (we no longer offer this service) and we agreed to back in 2021 when the order was written. As we were putting it in the dumpster, I almost wanted to rescue the chassis. The frame and spring up were perfectly good. The leather however, was shot as you can see in this photo of the cushion. See the shadow area where the seat core tucked under the seat back and that looks like new? Frequent readers KNOW that if you keep these leathers clean and conditioned every 6 months they will last considerably longer. This sofa got plenty of use, but no love. And to recover in leather is generally cost-prohibitive, its less to buy an all new piece. However, this sofa could have been a candidate to reupholster in a fabric for about $ 2K for the client, but they really wanted leather again.

So we're back to that sermon we like to preach - this should be a 30 year sofa! Keep it clean, conditioned, and don't let the sun UV eat it up and you won't have to replace it at the 15 year mark - will probably need a new set of cores at 15 years but that's it.
