Thread: Looking for style/possible period of mahogany desk/vanity?

Default Looking for style/possible period of mahogany desk/vanity?

Hello, was hoping someone might be able to tell me more info about a refurbished vanity/desk? Not looking for valuation, don't believe it's of any particular worth or a special piece, just would like to know what style and period it might be described as. Has 7 drawers, rounded face front, fluted legs with carving details. Original hardware.

Also curious about what the carvings at top of legs would be described as (resembles a ribbon sash to me, but I'm sure that's not the right term). Label in drawer says genuine mahogany; exterior has obviously been refinished. Framed chalkboard and bench are separate pieces; did not come with desk.

Would also appreciate any good book recommendations for identifying basic but proper furniture style terms, periods, etc. in the future - there's thousands of the sort on Amazon, so i don't know where to start. Thanks!

That is a Sheraton Style piece, a form that was popular from around 1790 to 1820 and named after the English Designer Thomas Sheraton. That's not an original, as the label references "plywood" and that wasn't invented until 1865, it's a reproduction of some sort that has nice lines and workmanship on it.

One of the basic books I like for American Furniture is here if you have an interest in American furniture styles. Grab a used one for $ 4.
