I get asked this question ten times a week. As a dog owner, I appreciate the attachment one has to your pets but the short answer is - there isn't one. Claws and nails and finely finished leather are incompatible, so the real answer is to train your pets to stay off the furniture. That's the only sure fire way. If you don't want to do that, then be prepared for some scratching of the leather no matter what price grade it may be in.

Amen! Train your pets to stay off. My dog knows she's not supposed to be up there, but she loves to rub around the front and sides. I'm hopeful that the leather won't provide as much friction as all those ugly tassels on my current set-up =)
Most dogs will not harm the leather unless they start 'digging' a nest, but you have to expect some marks here and there if you let them up on the furniture. Having had (4) dogs over the past 28 years, its relatively easy to train them to stay off the furniture - if you choose to do so - and its a lot easier to do that than chasing 'the perfect leather for dogs to be on the sofa'. My wife likes to let our Westie sleep on the furniture - and he takes advantage of that. Were it up to me, he'd stay on the floor!
