It's expensive to recover, new costs less.
I had a very nice lady call me to see if I can sell her the leather to recover her husband's 30-year old Hancock and Moore Austin chair and ottoman. Once I got the photos I could see this was an # 8132NB Austin and # 8131NB Austin Ottoman in some kind of blue leather. Assuming this is a GR 1 hide, I did the math and the chair needs 155 sf of leather, the ottoman 54 sf of leather. That's 209 s.f. of leather which translates to (5) hides. Cost of the leather alone is $ 4,900 from H&M. The chair needs new foam seat cores plus armcap tops (internal) so that's another $ 500 with shipping, brass nails are $ 100, then the upholster is going to be around $ 900 in most markets, plus $ 100 to refinish the legs. That assumes the 8-way hand-tied springs don't need re-tying. So this is a $ 6,500 project to recover using H&M parts, over double what you can buy a brand new combo of the same chair and ottoman in Viking leather. This set went 30 years of daily use, and its used up. I would not put any money into this set, it needs to be replaced.
It is however, a testament to H&M that it went a very long time and the customer wants the same exact chair again.
